Bad stomach acid (not pregnant) Been advised to "snack" what can I snack on that is low fat?

I have really bad stomach acid at the moment, not due to pregnancy. And am also trying to diet. My osteopath has advised me that "grazing" might help the stomach acid, but i need to know what i can snack on that is low fat/calories.

Any advice much appreciated.

Avoid Toast
Avoid Pastry
Avoid oranges, tomatoes, and anything else obviously acidic

but I am sure I am teaching my grandmother to suck eggs here.

colditz · 22/06/2007 11:47

dry cereal used to help me.

foxinsocks · 22/06/2007 11:50

you can get medication for that...you can do all the snacking, but the medication really zaps it!

no big meals, esp in the evening, spicy food and alcohol make it worse

those rye crackers are quite good

AnguaVonUberwald · 22/06/2007 12:19

Am on medication, but TTC, so on medication you can use during pregnancy, which doesn't totally deal with the problem. So will try all these different things.

Am avoiding tomatoes, unions, etc. Although still having the occasional bit of alcohol.

Thing is the osteopath thinks it might be happneing as my stomach doesn't ahve anything to do between meals, so thats why looking for low fat snacks!

aah I see

yes, the snacking will help I'm sure. Mine definitely gets worse if I have big gaps between my meals but generally, I'm always eating something!

Do you have breakfast? That's another good thing to try to do (I fail on that count!).

Eleusis · 22/06/2007 12:31

tums tums tums. Haven't we had this conversation?

foxinsocks · 22/06/2007 12:32

I'm sure I have with you eleusis. We have also had a cholesterol and migraine one at some stage (wonder if they are all connected!).

How are you doing?

Eleusis · 22/06/2007 12:34

buy Tums here

I THINK it is safe during pregnancy, but of course double check with a dietician.

Eleusis · 22/06/2007 12:36

I'm fine thanks. My latest health related adventured included a tour of Amida in Twickers last night. Ever so tempting.....

How are you?

foxinsocks · 22/06/2007 12:37

not too bad thanks. I looked round there too and then winced at the price.

did you sort out the school meal thing?

Eleusis · 22/06/2007 12:53

Yeah, I can stomach most of the price, but that £300 joining fee is a bit painful. I have offered them membership for me, dd, ds, and a nanny (at a student rate) if they waive the joining fee. I'm waiting to hear back.

I have a meeting with the head teacher after work tonight. I'm going to go in with a sample survey -- one that is more applicable than sandwich vs. hot meals. It will ask about processed meat content, fresh prepared, etc. and I'm going to ask her to send it out to the parents and consider their feedback. Then, I am hoping the parents can have an opportunity to chat with the governors about the various bids before a decision is made.

foxinsocks · 22/06/2007 12:57

that sounds like a good plan (with the meals).

Amida would be mad not to take you up tbh.

paulaplumpbottom · 22/06/2007 17:26

Oatcakes are good. Bananas are better. They help reduce stomah acid.

AnguaVonUberwald · 23/06/2007 08:19

Elusius, definitly looking into Tums.

Foxinsocks, always have breakfast, in fact I am not sure I would make it through the day without it.

Will try all these different things. Basically trying to assist the medication in anyway I can.
