Wisdom teeth removal on NHS- how long is the wait?

I have two impacted wisdom teeth and have been referred to UCH to get them removed. That was months ago and I’ve heard nothing... how long did others wait on the NHS for wisdom teeth surgery?

Is going private really £££££? I just want to get it done and move on! (But probably can’t afford to, so will have to wait...)

Have you rang the hospital Dept to enquire? This will also reassure you that they have actually received the referral. It's not unknown for referrals to go AWOL.
It depends on where you are in the UK as to what the W/list time is unfortunately.

That’s a good point - I haven’t! I will do that tomorrow! I’m in London, seems to be taking so long so far!

Im in Scotland. I saw my dentist about 2 weeks ago and was referred. I spoke to the oral surgeon today who will remove my windows tooth on the 11 December. It's just a removal under sedation rather under general at the dental hospital.

It might take longer if it needs to be done in a hospital.

I had one impacted wisdom tooth (my surgeon described it as being like a 'barnacle' so pretty nasty!) removed under a general anaesthetic as a day patient at a London private hospital. The cost was approx £1k total (luckily for me insurance covered 90% of that). It took a couple of weeks total from my dentist first saying there was a problem to the op itself. No post-care problems.

hundred I don’t have insurance - but interesting to know if can be a couple of weeks if you go privately! How long until you could do things like clean your teeth without pain / eat etc, if you don’t mind me asking?

planner Sounds like a pretty quick turn around in Scotland! I think mine will be under general from what my dentist has said. Gulp!

I waited 6 months for a cancellation appointment in the SW. Had numerous infections within that time. Hope you don't have to wait too much longer OP!

I imagine you can get it done much more quickly privately but I was trying to fit it around work commitments. Getting time off work was a problem for me, grrr (hence taking 2 weeks from start to finish).

I just ate/chewed on the other side of my mouth and cleaned my teeth carefully. Pretty straighforward. I always react badly to general anaesthetic so that was the worse part for me. The actual tooth bit was the least of my worries! Smile

14 months from referral to extraction (mine also had to be done under general anaesthetic at the hospital, they did all 4 at once).
