Blood test results - help!

So I had blood tests earlier this week as I’ve been feeling really unwell. I’ve logged onto my patient access account this morning and my bloods are back - a lot of the counts are saying they are abnormal but obviously I don’t know what they all mean and what the test results therefore mean!

Will my doctor get in touch with me to discuss them, or should I be phoning the practice to book an appointment?

If I was you I’d phone to make an appointment.

WhirlyGigWhirlyGig · 22/11/2018 11:15

The receptionist at our practice does all the calls in the afternoon to make telephone appointments for abnormal bloods.

Hiphopopotamus · 22/11/2018 11:17

Thanks whirly - that’s helpful to know. I’ll wait until this afternoon then and maybe phone if I don’t hear anything. I would just like to know what’s wrong. I started off googling each one but soon found that that way madness (and cancer!) lies!

People on here may be able to explain what the abnormal results are likely to be. Werr they testing for anything specific or a usual full blood count (FBC)?

NaToth · 22/11/2018 12:59

I'd give them a call and get yourself booked in.

Oh, and try not to worry too much until you get seen.

BlackInk · 22/11/2018 13:59

If you post a pic of the results here (with personal details removed) someone here will probably be able to help you whilst you wait for the drs to call you...

Hopefully they’ll make more sense to some of you!

Hi OP

Did you have other results back too, and these are just the abnormal ones?

I'm in no way an expert, but I've been having lots of tests myself recently and have done far too much reading up on things. Some of those results indicate that you could be anaemic or fighting off an infection or inflammation somewhere.

There's quite a lot that's come back as abnormal. Can you speak to your GP today?

Hope you get to the bottom of it, and it's easily fixable.

hopeful31yrs · 22/11/2018 14:48

They are not abnormal and none of those parameters are meaningful at that level. Everyone's bloods lie within a spectrum - some will lie in the arbitrary "abnormal" upper limit. This is the problem with giving people access to their own results - unless you've been trained to know what they mean there is little perspective. A computer generated tag of "abnormal" doesn't mean anything on its own and labelling them as such is not helpful for you.

QueenoftheNights · 22/11/2018 15:43

they are slightly out of normal range but hardly at all.you need advice. They are the things they test for (I think) if you might have an infection (virus) so white blood cells etc and a tiny bit above the norm may simply mean youve had a cold /flu type thing.

Hiphopopotamus · 22/11/2018 19:08

Ok so they’re not anything to worry about?

OP posts:
Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 22/11/2018 19:17

It looks like you had a viral infection at the time. Maybe a cold? With a few exceptions, really worrying results are much further away from normal.

I had gallbladder issues recently during which my liver-related bloods were tested. One of the results should have been 40 - 45 but mine was 1050. That warranted a call from the Gp.

Cerseilannisterinthesnow · 24/11/2018 21:35

I work in community nursing and spend all day every day taking bloods and checking up on the results, as others have said they are not worrying results, your crp ( c reactive protein) is an indicator of infection/inflammation which it looks like you may have had but usually would need to be a lot higher for gp to investigate/prescribe anything

Solasshole · 25/11/2018 04:07

None of these results are abnormal enough to be of any concern OP, they are ever so slightly elevated/decreased but not in any meaningful way. You need a much bigger variation from the reference range for all of these (except maybe crp) for it to be important and not just normal variation between different people.

I'm assuming your haemoglobin is normal (as otherwise would have flagged as abnormal) so you aren't anaemic.

Regardless, if you have concerns then speak to your GP for advice and not internet strangers Wink

SofiaAmes · 25/11/2018 04:35

Just because these results are a little off which doesn't mean much, doesn't diminish that you are feeling unwell. Did they check your Vitamin D levels? What else is going on in your life that might have changed and caused you to feel unwell?

swingofthings · 25/11/2018 06:28

The way my GP explained it is that ranges is based on averages of people (sometimes adjusted for age or other factors). Some people results will still fall slightly outside of that range and still be normal. Or it could be that something like a common infection triggered the results at the time. In this instance it is normal practice to arrange another blood test within a few weeks or months.

5his happened to me a few times. One result related to my thyroid came back normal and has been ever since. One other result though which was significantly above the threshold but was dismissed as a one off by my GP at the time remained high but sadly he failed to realised that this was a marker for vit b12 deficiency which isn't good since I had all the symptoms associated with it and I did ask whether it could be the issue.

You do need to speak with your gp and look at all your tests results including ferritin, b12 if it was done and folic acid.
