Breast clinic appointment, feeling alone

Beaniebaby4 · 21/11/2018 15:28

I had a change in one nipple a few months ago, didn’t think it was too much of a big deal. Found a small lump week before last, barely noticeable so didn’t alarm, found it again last week now the size of a pea.
Been to GP following a family friends advice (who apparently hasn’t been sleeping much since I told her but apparently she’s a big worrier anyway). Got an urgent breast clinic appointment which I’ve heard is standard. Been told it’s probably just a cyst but it’s crazy how your mind races with these things.
Told my sister so she could come with me to both appointments and MIL also knows as she managed to wrangle an earlier GP appointment.
Husband does not know, have opted not to tell him as he is not doing well currently with his mental health and always jumps to worst conclusion regarding health. So sister is also supplying alibi. Was planning on telling him once I have news either way.
Sister has had to go home for now and MIL is busy. Was hoping DD would keep me occupied today but she’s ill so has spent all day in bed asleep.
All but one of the women in my family have had some sort of cancer and most of the men have too so obviously on high alert. Am only 24 so know it’s probab unlikely but still, going a bit stir crazy on my own and I still don’t even know when the appointment is.

OP - I can't link cos I'm on my phone but there is an ongoing thread in General Health to support women who are waiting for appointments/test results. Pop on there and introduce yourself - the women on there are lovely and funny and will give you some hand holding.

Good luck at the clinic.

Aw OP, sorry to hear that. It is very stressful waiting for a breast clinic appointment (I had one two weeks ago) but 90% of people referred to them don't have cancer and it's probably more like 95% for people under 25 so try to keep that in mind.

It's great that your sis can go with you!

KingIrving · 22/11/2018 04:52

I have just jumped off the crazy-waiting-for-results train and i can totally understand how you are feeling.
I had the whole lot, mammogram, MRI and ultrasound guided biopsy which was scary as hell and I came to realise that unless you have experimented it, you can't understand it.
It is like motherhood, you have all your ideas on how and what you will do, but when you eventually become a mother you realise it was a bunch of crap. IN the same way, we all have our idea that maybe one day we will find a lump that will need investigating but when the crazy train starts its journey, well it is not what you had imagined.

The relief when I received the phone call to tell me the lump was benign is indescribable .
I won't tell you to not worry, but I will be there for you while you wait for the appointment and the tests.
You are young and really most of the time, lumps are just breast tissue.
Fingers crossed

Thank you for replies, finally have a date, 3rd December. Which is also the date of my wedding anniversary so I really hope DH didn’t make any plans (although we have both completely forgotten before).
Also DH’s birthday this weekend so I’ve got to try and perk up a bit.
I will definitely be ordering a ridiculous amount of takeaway from somewhere when this is all over!
I’m so nervous I think because of the family history, my mum had cancer first in her early thirties ( I was quite young at the time so was only told that it happened in my teens) then died in her 40s so I’m very aware of it, i just expected my first proper lump investigation to happen later.

I'm so sorry that you lost your Mum at such a young age. Flowers

I hope you manage to have quite a good weekend celebrating your DH's birthday.

Best of luck for 3rd December!

@Beaniebaby4 I hope your appointment went well.
Were they able to find out what it was?

Beaniebaby4 · 04/12/2018 19:38

@kingirving
Was an infection of the lymph nodes due to the eczema in the end. Very relieved!
Just waiting for a dermatology referral now.
Thank you all for your support Smile

Oh is am so so happy for you.
It is crazy how we seem to fall in this deep hole, isn’t it?
We have all imagined that maybe one day, we will find a lump and imagined how we would react, but the reality is so different!
Enjoy the Christmas season!!

Hi Beaniebaby, that's great news!! Hope you have a fab Christmas!

I've been referred to dermatology too but I've decided to get a second opinion as there was inflammation and thickening on my ultrasound.
