My husband had spinal disc herniation and had surgery. Healing time was a fair few weeks (strictly no sitting for more than a few minutes at a time for a while) but it's cured his pain Smile

Hi op, there is a rare condition called Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES) which is caused by damage to the nerves at the base of the spinal cord and often originates from herniated discs at L4/5 S1

There are a number of red flag symptoms for CES

Bilateral sciatic pain that often extends into the soles of the feet
Saddle numbness - buttocks, perineal area, tops of thighs
Urinary disturbance - this includes urinary retention, incontinence, difficulty starting to urinate
Constipation
Sexual dysfunction
Ankle weakness
Inability to stand on tip toes
Acute back pain when raising legs in a lying position

If as you say your DH is experiencing urinary symptoms he should receive an emergency MRI and decompression surgery.
Phone 111 describe his symptoms and explain that he has a known disc herniation and you are concerned about CES they should send an ambulance if they don't get him to A&E and don't leave until you have seen/spoken to a spinal surgeon, not a general surgeon or orthopaedic surgeon.

Good luck

Disc removal fixed me.

I only have a partial herniation - it seems to pop in and out. When it's been bad I have had cortisone injections into the disc (under scanner). I'm not sure if that's appropriate for a total herniation though. I've also had a lot of help from an excellent osteopath.

I called 111 today and they said they will send an ambulance to pick him up but my hubby is too much worried about going to hosipital and reluctant as to what they will do .he says if this condition gets worse tomorrow then he will go.he is in too much pain.he literally passed out in afternoon due to pain and is just unable to do anything .

I had the same disc removed in 2016. I still experience a dull aching down my leg and my back will always have an element of pain from a 2nd disk but no where near the excruciating and dibiliating pain I was in. Well worth the op and I was literally ok to fly short hall within 2 weeks of the OP.

Gg- that sort of recalcitrance on his part is very dangerous, given these symptoms. He is risking permanent paralysis, incontinence and impotence, because he’s scared of the doctor.
