Whooping cough and flu vaccination, to vaccinate or not to vaccinate?

RuJuAs · 20/11/2018 17:40

I'm 17+3weeks pregnant and wondering whether i should or shouldn't get the vaccinations. My midwife and GP are REALLY trying to push me to get both vaccines but my mum, some nurse friends and other people are advising me to not get it.

I'd like to hear from some mothers who chose to have it and those who chose against it.

Thanks in advance

Good grief why on earth wouldn't you???

You'd be risking your health, and that of your unborn baby. Babies die from whooping cough. Die. Painfully. They are most at risk as newborns and vaccinating yourself during pregnancy is the only way to protect them.

Similarly, flu is nasty. Have you ever had it? Youre most at risk of severe complications during pregnancy.

The NHS doesn't prompt vaccination for the craic of it. There is a shed load of evidence behind it.

LeeMiller · 20/11/2018 18:18

I've had both. They are inactive vaccines, I wasn't worried at all and had no reaction afterwards.

I'm not in the UK and where I live the whooping cough vaccine has (thankfully) been introduced in pregnancy this year after 2 newborns contracted it in hospital and died earlier in the year.

Flu is awful, a friend had to abandon breastfeeding because of it. It can be really dangerous in pregnancy, for you and your baby.

What reasons do you mum, nurse friends and other people have for advising against it?

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 20/11/2018 18:21

If course you should have them It would be hugely irresponsible of you to not get them.

mybumpismostlypudding · 20/11/2018 18:31

Out of interest, what's putting you off? I had my flu jab this morning and it didn't hurt at all, I was expecting to feel really grim afterwards!

SlightAggrandising · 20/11/2018 18:37

Gosh, fiend of mine was critically ill with flu. Had a c section to save both lives. She can't remember anything for about a week.

What an odd thing to advise against. Life saving western medicine.

Frlrlrubert · 20/11/2018 18:44

I had the whooping cough one, my friend almost died from it when we were kids so it was a no-brainier. My arm was a bit sore.

I didn't have the flu jab because it wasn't flu season, but I have had it on other occasions because I have asthma, and it's always been fine, though it was sore the one year I'd already had flu (I thought it was a really bad cold plus being run down!) and my body reacted - big red mark from that one!

I don't see why you wouldn't have all the things that can protect your baby to be honest.

NerrSnerr · 20/11/2018 18:45

Whooping cough kills babies. Why wouldn't you protect your newborn from it?

Screaminginsidemeagain · 20/11/2018 18:56

Whooping cough definitely.

Beach11 · 20/11/2018 18:58

Whooping cough isn’t for you, it’s for the baby!

Stuckforthefourthtime · 20/11/2018 19:01

This was shared by the parents of the baby in question. She didn't get the whooping cough vaccination. He died at 1 month old.

I'm pretty astonished that any nurse friends are telling you not to vaccinate. They must certainly not be paediatric ones...

flakebaby · 20/11/2018 19:03

Flu can kill pregnant women (pregnancy makes your immune system weaker)
Whooping cough can kill new borns.

Vaccinate protects against both.

MamaHechtick · 20/11/2018 19:11

Absolutely hate needles, but I went and had the vaccines when I was pregnant without a second thought.

Also surprised by nurse friends telling you not to, I have nurse friends and they absolutely urge every one of our pregnant friends to get the vaccines.

allthatmalarkey · 20/11/2018 19:18

1 in 100 children under 12 months who get whooping cough die. Of course, if you and your baby get whooping cough, it might not be your baby who dies, it could be someone else's that you or your baby passed it on to. If you're ok with that, don't get the vac.

Aozora13 · 20/11/2018 19:26

I had the whooping cough jab to protect the baby and the flu jab because I had flu last year and it was horrific so wanted to minimise the risks. No side effects except a sore arm from the whooping cough one for a few hours

Shellyanne131 · 20/11/2018 19:28

I've had both and had no side effects at all

Please get the jabs though - both my parents have whooping cough at the moment, they had vaccinations when they were younger and the amount they have suffered with the illness is awful, not being able to breath and choking all the time, I can't imagine a little baby being able to cope with being that ill, it's worth it for the peace of mind. We're in the UK and they have not knowingly been in contact with someone with it.

flamingox · 20/11/2018 19:29

I had both. The immunity is passed on to baby until they have their vaccines. X

gemsparkle84 · 20/11/2018 19:30

I'm VERY surprised your 'nurse friends' are advising you not to get them. What are they basing that on? Btw I'm 32 weeks and had both. Had both in my last pregnancy too.

Sirzy · 20/11/2018 19:33

Are the nurse friends scbu/peads nurses who have had to deal with babies being ill due to lack of vaccination?

hamzilla · 20/11/2018 19:36

I don't think you should get either vaccination.

Firstly, you get stabbed. With a NEEDLE. Secondly, your arm might be a bit sore afterwards. So sore that it might feel like a BRUISE. Do you really want to protect your baby from life threatening illnesses for the risk of a sore arm? No, neither would I. Oh and thirdly a friend of a friend read on a website that has nothing to do with science but was shared by someone on Facebook who has 3 kids so must know what they're talking about that vaccines have CHEMICALS in them.

lemsipsareshit · 20/11/2018 19:41

Its your choice...

BUT my daughter had whooping cough, I had the vaccine too late to give her full immunity. It was horrendous. I'm not exaggerating. Knowing I could have prevented her getting sick is the worst guilt I have ever had

Amara123 · 20/11/2018 19:41

Last year a baby in our area died from whooping cough, it was a no brained for me to have both vaccines during my pregnancy this year. Imagine knowing you could have prevented it...

Flamingosnbears · 20/11/2018 19:42

Strongly recommend you do if not for your own but the babys health at least

mumsastudent · 20/11/2018 19:44

I was watching (late) last night a program on "twisted faith" it was about a religious "group" (cult?) In Ohio (I think) They believed in no medical intervention at all - no surgery, no doctors, no medicine, no vaccination. The number of children in the grave yard who had died recently was horrific. from simple things like untreated food poisoning when the young girl (aged 15) had died of a throat haemorrhage from excessive vomiting, childbirth injuries, infections etc. It makes you realize how lucky we are to have a choice to stop out children dying or becoming disabled from serious infections. I had hooping cough as a kid it was horrible & long lasting - other children died from it & babies are the most susceptible. Pregnant women & their unborn/newborn babies are the most vulnerable to flu

mumsastudent · 20/11/2018 19:46

whooping cough -

boomboo · 20/11/2018 19:47

Please get vacinated. I had them for both my pregnancies and no problems.
I also survived whooping cough as a baby and although I was incredibly lucky I have experienced life long problems as a result.
