Asthma and steroid cards

My daughter has just been told she should carry a steroid card, do any other asthmatics carry them? She has been asthmatic all her life, she's 28, and this is the first time it has ever been mentioned, she is on a lower dose of inhaled steroid than she has previously been prescribed so she was wondering why it is important all of a sudden.

I've had asthma all my life and the only time I've had to carry a steroid card was when I was on long term prednisolone as a child/teenager. I use steroid inhalers now and a card has never been mentioned.

Yes, I had one given to me. I have no idea why. I put in in my purse. I am very compliant Grin

I'm not even on long term prednisolone, just seritide.

I was given a blue steroid card after receiving a high dosage at A&E after an asthma attack, told to keep and present for the next 12 months, don't think I ever remembered too!
I'm on a daily low dosage steroid inhaler and I've never been given another card by the doctors.

My DD and I have asthma and use Clenil and I have never been told his. I have heard of steroid cards but assumed it was for long term use of oral steroids. My DD has been on two short term courses and was not given a card.

If you take steriods and suddenly stop them or have some sort of crash where you’re unconscious it can be very dangerous and they may need to administer extra steriods - similar to an adrenal crisis for someone with Addison’s disease (if you google adrenal crisis you can find out now about this). Not everyone who is on steriods will have these issues though, I think they like to be safe than sorry nowadays.

I have Addison’s disease and asthma so I always carry a card and I also wear a medical bracelet but this is more for the Addison’s.
