Hurt leg - WWYD?

10 weeks ago I did something to my leg. No idea what - so, obviously, no significant trauma.

It felt like I had pulled a muscle badly in the back/side of my calf.

Over the last 10 weeks I would say it has actually got worse - and my knee is now clicking weirdly fairly often. I can weight bear but it does sort of give way intermittently - more because it is so painful that I have to take my weight off it quickly than because it actually gives way though IYSWIM.

I have seen a physio privately twice - he thinks I have torn something quite badly. Both times after treatment though (which has been massage mainly) I have barely been able to function for the following 48 hours as it is so painful.

Other salient facts:

  1. I am hyper-mobile so my muscles generally aren't in a great state all over.
  2. I am 4 stone overweight so that won't be helping.
  3. I am mid-40s.

Is there any point going to the GP with this? Or is it just a case of needing time? It is driving me mad as it is really holding me back physically!

Does anyone have any thoughts?

You need to see your GP. It needs x-day or scan to determine the cause of the pain and the correct treatment. Also adequate pain relief if necessary.

FadedRed · 19/11/2018 19:50

X-day obviously.

Ffs autocorrect!
X-ray

Do you think they'll take it seriously though Faded? I know everything is so stretched at the minute and I don't want to waste their time (or indeed mine!) Do you think the length of time it is taking to heal is the main issue?

Sounds like you have a meniscal tear, which won't show on an X-ray, although thats probably where your GP will send you first. You need an MRI, and if it is a meniscal tear you'll need arthroscopy to sort it.In lots of places GPs aren't allowed to order MRIs anymore, so they'll have to send you to an orthopaedic clinic first. You aren't wasting anyones time...if it is a meniscal tear it isn't going to get better on its own, and it might get worse. As Faded said, make sure you are taking appropriate pain relief in the mean time.

Thanks drinthehouse - I will make an appt then. Thanks to both you and Faded for replying.

Yes, they should take it seriously. You've given it time and simple physio and it hasn't improved, so you need a proper diagnosis. You need those knees to last another 40+ years if possible!
