Dental advice? Hole between two back teeth

At my last routine check up the dentist discovered a cavity on the edge of my furthest back top tooth, between that and the next door tooth. The tooth with the hole doesn't have a tooth on the bottom that meets it, so she is recommending having it extracted. The other option is to have it filled, but apparently because the hole is between two teeth that's obviously tricky.

I've never had an extraction so am a bit scared, and also don't really want to lose a tooth (nostalgically probably) - anyone had this? What did you do?

Assume if I don't get it fixed it will probably just get worse and I might get horrible toothache and it'll be harder to fix, so realise I've probably got to woman-up and do something about it at least.

Is it your wisdom tooth? I had my upper left wisdom tooth out last year because the gum round it had gone all manky and infected. I swear to god, it was so quick and easy, one minute the dentist was saying “do you feel anything sharp?” then the next she was plonking the tooth in a dish and asking if I wanted to see it. It was like opening a bottle of wine.

I’m not actually sure if it’s my wisdom tooth! Assume so, as there’s no more room in my mouth for another tooth back there!

That’s very reassuring it wasn’t horrendous having a tooth out. Hm. Still don’t really want to say goodbye to it and wondering if a filling would be better, although the dentist is saying extraction probably best,

Can you ask the dentist to try to fill and switch to an extraction if too difficult?

I had a hole between teeth filled.
See another dentist for a second opinion.

Theres no reason a hole between two teeth shouldnt be fillable but if it's a wisdom tooth getting up to the back can be very difficult. It also depends on where it is.

I'm assuming the dentist knows that it's going to be difficult, you could try filling it and hoping for the best basically but it might be that they are worried that they will cut your cheek or gums because of the position of the tooth and the difficulty getting all the equipment back there.

If it is a wisdom tooth it can be variable but often upper wisdom teeth can just pop out. If it isn't a wisdom tooth the extraction might be longer, and I would probably try to fill it.

If a wisdom tooth and nothing to bite on opposite I'd probably just have it out, but if your really worried you can always get a second opinion!

Or the decay could spread to the other tooth...

Ah, thank you for advice. So wisdom teeth tend to come out more easily than regular teeth? I think the dentist thought no advantage to filling it as the filling could fail and it would be difficult, given the tooth is a bit pointless as it doesn’t bite on anything.
