Anyone had a one sided enlarged thyroid?

My thyroid is enlarged, but only on one side.
It's smooth but fairly firm and doesn't hurt.
Anyone else had similar issues?
I have an ENT referral for 2 weeks time

I have this. Mine is a thyroid nodule and fluctuates in size. It's enormous at the moment because it has just been biopsied and seems to have swelled up in response. Mine is monitored by the doctors. If it stays as big as it is at the moment I'm going to have to get it removed as it's affecting my swallowing and looks unsightly!

Yes, me. Lumpy nodules. Can see them in the mirror. No thyroid issues. I believe nodules are very very common a d associated with aging.

Yes...in 2003/2004. It was a goitre on my Thyroid gland, caused by Graves Disease. It looked a bit like an Adams apple, but off to the side a bit. (I'm female)
My thyroid was overactive, I had to go on Carbimazole to balance the excess hormone and then I had the thyroid gland removed.
As a result, I'm on a daily, lifetime dose of Thyroxine. I'm in good health and absolutely fine.
The options to remove it were either surgery or Radioiodine and I had the latter.
If you search online for both procedures, plenty of information will be there.

...hopefully, you've had your blood tests done? If not, it's probably worth having your thyroid levels checked before your ENT appointment if you can. It might speed things up a bit.

Good luck

I had my bloods done and all normal. I had my 3rd baby 7 weeks ago. The lump seemed to appear out of nowhere last week. I went to my GP straight away and came out feeling super anxious. Had a trip to A&E. Consultant who did bloods had a good feel and said if it was her she wouldn't be too worried about it.

Does the size fluctuate because its hormonal?
Is your nodule quite hard?

I had a nodule on one side, which was biopsied (twice), with inconclusive results, so was advised to have it removed along with that side of the thyroid gland (hemithyroidectomy). That 2012, and was a very straightforward recovery, with one night in hospital (mainly because I was a bit sick after the anaesthetic ). The nodule was eventually determined to be benign, and it didn’t impact thyroid function so I don’t take thyroxin or anything like that.

Happy to answer any more specific questions if you like 🙂

Good to hear it all went smoothly!
How big was it roughly?

Mine fluctuates a bit because it is largely cystic. I've had three FNA biopsies now, all of which are inconclusive (very common not to get a clear reading with an FNA) but on the scan it looks very benign. I imagine I will have a hemi-thyroidectomy at some point as it can feel rather uncomfortable and it would be nice to know for certain that it is 100% benign. Mine is roughly 3.5cm and like yours it appeared very suddenly when my second daughter was just a few months old. It is quite common to have a small haemorrhage into an existing nodule which is what happened to me and is often the cause of a suddenly appearing large lump.

Worriedbell10 · 20/11/2018 10:33

Did that make it feel quite hard tuscanrose?
Mine is smooth and round in shape but quite hard. Was yours movable?

Rikalaily · 20/11/2018 10:56

I have a just under 2cm nodule on the left side, smooth, round and doesn't move. It was biopsied in 2012 and I had a scan last month to check it again as it's grown since my 5m old was born and my bloods are wonky again. My TSH always sat on the border for overactive but T3 & T4 were always normal until my last baby was born. Not my T4 is low, which is the opposite of what it should be with my TSH being low. I'm haivng more bloods done in Jan to see if it's settled, if not I assume I'll be refered back to teh endo.

Worriedbell10 - mine is smooth and sometimes feels quite soft, other times can feel quite firm. At the moment it feels very firm. I can't move it around ifyswim but it moves up and down with my thyroid when I swallow.

Lineofbeauty · 20/11/2018 19:40

Mine is exactly like tuscanrose's.

I had a FNA about 15 yrs ago which found it was a 'mixed' echoic nodule...never been called for follow up and research suggests very low malignancy potential.
Even where the old nodules are malignant, it's generally (with rare exceptions) the kind of cancer you'd want to have... ie. v good prognosis.
