I have just seen a little wriggly white thing in DS1 poo! It must be a threadworm I guess. No experience of this so what do I need to do? Please?

dont panic. just go the chemist tomorrow and get the whole family a worming tablet each.
Be careful with hygeine (bath toys, flannels, towels etc)
They will go as easily as they came, honest.

MorningtonCrescent · 20/06/2007 19:36

calm down dear - calm down.

Okay - you need to get stuff from the chemist - tablets and treat whole family.

Hot wash all sheets and towels.

Hoover.

Have a chat about hand washing.

Don't worry - happens to loads of people. Someone else more comprehensive will come along.

You get oer the ewwww! factor - bit like head lice. Part of parenting.

no, they are foul, seriously. We are threadworm veterans here!

You can get stuff over the counter at the chemist. I think under 2s have different stuff to the older ones.

Once you have treated, cut nails, wash bedding - put non nappy children in bed with underpants on. Wipe bum on waking to get rid of the eggs. Give older child a pep talk about not scratching bum.

Tell nursery because they may want to change the playdoh/sand in the sand pit (don't feel obliged if you are worried - bet most parents don't tell them).

Hoover, wash door handles - clean house madly.

Give second dose in 2 weeks time and keep fingers crossed that you've got rid of the blasted things.

thanks everyone feel calmer now

I thought threadworms were those huge things that grow really long and take up your whople intestine (1 worm I mean)

I thought the little worms that you get and see in your poo were roundworms

foxinsocks · 20/06/2007 19:56

that's a tape worm (the big, long worm)

threadworms look like little cotton threads

roundworms are less common in the Uk and look more like normal worms (I think(

binkleandflip · 20/06/2007 20:00

I'm not sure that roundworm is actually a worm is it? or am I thinking of ringworm?

foxinsocks · 20/06/2007 20:25

you're thinking of ring worm (that's a fungal infection I think). Roundworm is a worm.

jellyjelly · 20/06/2007 21:02

Could mucus be confused with worms?

binkleandflip · 20/06/2007 21:55

Not really, threadworms tend to wriggle about for a couple of seconds once they are out in the open

jellyjelly · 21/06/2007 21:16

Going to ask a gross question. (I have not had any experiance of this but ds who is 4.5 keeps complaining that his bum hurts and is itchy all the time) Can you see them when the poo is floating or do you have to peer lots? Sorry for being daft.

Mrscarrot · 21/06/2007 21:21

Sometimes you can see one. Sometimes you can see lots.

When we had them, dd came down with one on the end of her finger. Nice.

jellyjelly · 21/06/2007 22:23

yuck. He does keep picking the doc gave us some thrush cream and now he has a very spotty bum.

Elibean · 21/06/2007 22:41

jelly, has the thrush cream helped?

I've been putting thrush cream (Canesten) on my dd for the last two days, as she's been sore and red around her vaginal opening and a bit round her anus...she gets eczema, and the combination of that, and not wiping properly, can cause irritated skin that then gets thrush, really easily.

I'm pretty sure its that, because she's stopped touching herself since I put the cream on, but juts in case - worm paranoid that I am - have given her a dose of Ovex.

But I've never seen a worm, either on poo or on her with torch at night, and nearly everyone else's worm-stories involve seeing one of the little horrors at some point...
