Is he on the liquid stuff? I'd suspect the sweeteners or colourings or flavourings, more than the drug per se ...

dinny · 20/06/2007 19:18

yes, agre, all the additives and chemicals

dissle · 20/06/2007 19:19

hmm, could be.

not managing him at all, not coping

Go back to the drs, get an alternative prescription and insist they mark bog-standard amoxycillin as contraindicated for your ds from now on

is this a recognised side effect?

By parents, yes. By doctors - it varies, tbh. Some are still sceptical, but your poor boy's reaction sounds pretty extreme

NoodleStroodle · 20/06/2007 19:23

DH on it at the moment and is very very ill......not

dissle · 20/06/2007 19:23

So, if this is the reaction possibly sweetners and colourings in foods cause him to be "difficult" as well?

What foods should i look out for?

I'm no expert dissle, I just know someone whose child reacts badly to that amoxycillin syrup
You could try posting for advice in our Allergies section...

Off the top of my head I believe tartrazine, ponceau red are both notorious but I'm really sorry, I don't know their E numbers

Marina · 20/06/2007 19:27

Colourings are in sweets, squashes, ice lollies...

FairlyOddParent · 20/06/2007 19:28

Amoxicillin suspensions contain sweeteners, colourings and flavourings, all artificial. Most foods, even sweets, these days steer clear of these sorts of additives for health reasons. Medicines are a different ball game, though. Worth checking food labels though if your ds has experienced similar reactions after eating.

dissle · 20/06/2007 19:30

Well, this is extreme at the mo.

He is what i would describe as challenging allot of the time any way.

Not this bad tho
totally unmanageable

Tartrazine = E102 & Ponceau red = E124 I think. Correct me if I'm wrong!?

christywhisty · 20/06/2007 22:46

antibiotics make both my 2 hyper, they don't have problems with food colourings or additives or sweeteners, just anti biotics.
