What helps you with constipation?

itsthemenopausenotme · 13/11/2018 23:58

I've got bad constipation at the moment. i think it may be due to my underactive thyroid. I have a fissure and also a prolapse which is complicating matters and the fissure means I'm in so much pain. I do go every day, but it's always hard and extremely painful. Due to the prolapse I can't go easily.

I'm trying to drink more water, I usually drink just decaff black coffee and tea.

What can I do for quick relief? I can't take lactulose due to an intolerance and fibrogel and bran aggravate my IBS. I have a gluten free diet.

Any suggestions welcome! I can't stand another day like this!

LittleBookofCalm · 14/11/2018 00:03

plenty of exercise?

SouthwarkSkaters · 14/11/2018 00:03

Papaya if you can get hold of some. Water definitely helps.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 14/11/2018 00:04

Kiwi is supposed to be fantastic

LittleBookofCalm · 14/11/2018 00:06

Do you drink beer?

Haworthia · 14/11/2018 00:08

I think you need a stool softener. If you manage to go every day then you don’t primarily have a problem with gut motility. Laxido and Movicol are the main brands. Prescription or OTC (Laxido is cheaper!)

Blondie1984 · 14/11/2018 00:08

Stewed fruit - like apples and pears
Linseeds in bio yoghurt
Senokot/ Dulcolax

SlowlyShrinking · 14/11/2018 00:09

Magnesium citrate powder
Strong caffeinated coffee
Dried apricots
Psyllium husk is meant to be good but I haven’t tried it myself
Go for a run

ShovingLeopard · 14/11/2018 00:09

Magnesium citrate or large doses of vitamin C. The mag will soften it. A large enough dose of vit C will go through so quickly it'll be liquid.... Sorry if TMI, but with a fissure I thought that info might be helpful.

SlowlyShrinking · 14/11/2018 00:10

Apply coconut oil directly to the fissure

PickAChew · 14/11/2018 00:10

Clear from the other end with glycerine suppositories.

SleepWarrior · 14/11/2018 00:13

In addition to all the dietary stuff, a soak in a deep warm bath whilst gently massaging your tum may help everything move along.

When you sit on the toilet put your feet on a little step so they are more raised than just on the floor (creates a better angle for the last bit of bowel to empty).

itsthemenopausenotme · 14/11/2018 00:17

Thanks.

I can't let out go the other way because diarrhoea hurts the fissure as well.

I can't run or walk far due to the pain with the prolapse.

I can't drink caffeinated coffee or my heart will start racing.

I'll up the fruit intake.

I do take magnesium but the other sort in order to avoid diarrhoea - see reason above.

I go every day but it's really difficult and I kind of have to help it along ... without going into too much detail ... tmi, sorry Blush I think that isn't helping the fissure heal.

Sorry missed some suggestions, I'll try those as well. I just want to avoid getting diarrhoea instead.

Prunes. Orange juice. Fig rolls. Senna

autumnleaves19 · 14/11/2018 00:22

I use oxytech by Rolf Gordon, have a quick google. Don't use it all the time, just as needed

Shriek · 14/11/2018 00:22

Cut out bread.

autumnleaves19 · 14/11/2018 00:22

You can order a sample by phoning them to see if it helps you

Shriek · 14/11/2018 00:22

Increase vit c

Corcra · 14/11/2018 00:22

I find chia seeds in my porridge is the only thing that works and works brilliantly.

PickAChew · 14/11/2018 00:27

The suppositories don't give you diarrhoea. They soften the plug and lubricate it's way out very gently.

PickAChew · 14/11/2018 00:29

And, if you need more than that, talk to your pharmacist about stool softeners, rather than laxatives.

Iwantaunicorn · 14/11/2018 00:34

Tummy massage might help, there’s loads of guides online.

halfwitpicker · 14/11/2018 00:40

Fresh pineapple.
Homemade lentil and veg soup.
Homemade applesauce.
