GP can't seem to find out what's wrong?!

Hi all,

Not sure what I hope to achieve from this thread just feeling frustrated because the GP seems to have no clue what's causing my symptoms. The latest blood test I've had is to check my thyroid and it's come back normal and while I know that's good news, it just makes me feel so deflated that I still don't know what the matter is.

My symptoms are as follows

Really tired all day
Short of breath
Aching muscles
Waking up sweating
Urinating much more frequently
Insomnia
Diarrhea
Complete Loss of libido
Irritability
Anxiety

My GP put me on an antidepressant in June as she thought it was anxiety but these have done nothing to help.

Starting to feel like I must be going crazy and it's all in my head Sad Just wondering if anyone else has experienced symptons like this and what the end result was?

I don't know a lot about thyroids but I do know from others on here that 'normal' thyroid results often are still problematic if looked at in a different context. If you know what your results were it might be worth posting them here?

Because a number of people in my family have it I would always suggest anyone experiencing fatigue and bowel issues gets checked for coeliac disease - it's an autoimmune condition so you can get all kinds of funny symptom with it but fatigue and it's symptoms are pretty classic for coeliac.

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/11/2018 15:51

I was just going to say coeliac. Also get vit d levels checked.

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/11/2018 15:52

Oh and checked out for diabetes.

Inaminuteplease · 12/11/2018 15:53

@pastabest thank you, I will ask about celiac disease when I go back to see her on Wednesday. I do get badly bloated sometimes too but don't get any stomach pain so didn't think much of it before.

I don't know what the exact ranges were, I didn't ask, she just said they had come back normal no action to be taken. They tested my TSH & FT4.

HollowTalk · 12/11/2018 15:53

Diabetes?

Inaminuteplease · 12/11/2018 15:54

@NicoAndTheNiners thanks I will write all these down and ask about being tested for these 🤞🏻

Coeliac disease has something like 200 possible symptoms. People can have any combination inc silent coeliacs with no symptoms.

Dd had tiredness, joint pain, muscle aches, irritabilty, diarrhoea and tummy pain.

Inaminuteplease · 12/11/2018 15:57

@HollowTalk I did think of diabetes because of the constant urinating but the GP never mentioned it so I thought my other symptoms must not match up

It would be helpful to know sex and age - ie could you be perimenopausal. Also what tests have been done already besides thyroid? Ie full blood count? Anti nuclear testing etc re autoimmune disorders.

GeoffreysCat · 12/11/2018 16:00

Definitely get vit D checked.

BollocksToBrexit · 12/11/2018 16:02

I have similar symptoms. I've just been referred to be tested for sleep apnea.

Inaminuteplease · 12/11/2018 16:06

@Over50andfab sorry should have said I'm female and 28... I've had my iron levels and thyroid tested that's all so far as the GP initially thought it was anxiety so prescribed the anti depressants but it's only now 5 months later when the symptoms have still not gone away that she has agreed to test for other causes.

NicoAndTheNiners · 12/11/2018 16:14

When dd had her symptoms dr tested for diabetes and she didn't even have frequent urination.

Over50andfab · 12/11/2018 16:16

Ah ok thank you. Iron and vit D deficiency are quite common, so normally among the first to be ruled out. Unfortunately the not knowing can give rise to more anxiety. The only thing you can do is go with the flow and keep on pushing for answers. I’d say full blood count etc could be helpful, but he’s the doctor, not us. Hope you get an answer soon

emwithme · 12/11/2018 16:30

My first thoughts were B12/folate/vitamin D.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 12/11/2018 17:35

I would return to the GP and ask what the range was for the TSH and ft4. I also thought of you possibly having an overactive thyroid upon reading your symptoms. Never accept "normal" when it comes to thyroid testing.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 12/11/2018 17:37

One of the issues with the blood tests for TSH and T4 are the reference ranges used to determine whether your levels are abnormally high or low. Normal ranges vary from country to country, and there have been suggestions from some bodies that the UK ranges should be lowered or raised.

percheron67 · 12/11/2018 17:39

Hello OP. I have had many of these symptoms and was tested for Sjogrens. The test came back negative and I still have no answer! Could be your answer though.

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 12/11/2018 17:42

OP, I would ask your GP to test you again for TSH, ft4, ft3, ferritin, vitamin D, vitamin b12.

I have hypothyroidism (Hashimoto) and I get a lot of symptoms similar to yours when my levels are off.

I am not sure what is considered normal range in the UK, but I am in Germany and you get treated when your TSH is above 4,2. Do you know what was yours?

HarryTheSteppenwolf · 12/11/2018 17:51

My symptoms are as follows

Several are suggestive of anaemia (could be caused by any number of things, including coeliac disease). Some are suggestive of endocrine disorders (e.g. Addison's disease; pituitary or thyroid less likely). Some are suggestive of anxiety, but I'd be surprised at this being the diagnosis without extensive tests excluding other causes. Do you know any of your blood test results (sodium, glucose, potassium, leukocyte numbers, etc.)?

Inaminuteplease · 12/11/2018 18:04

@hallodarknessmyoldfriend I don't know what level mine was but I'll be asking when I go back on Wednesday and will also asked to be tested for the other things

EllenRipley · 12/11/2018 18:10

Sorry you're feeling rubbish. I second previous replies; it's important you get your ferritin (iron stores rather than 'circulating iron'), Vit D & B12 tested too, if they haven't been done already. And I know from friends' experience that the standard thyroid tests done by your GP aren't detailed enough to get a full picture of thyroid function. Food intolerances/allergies like coeliac also good idea. I hope you get to the bottom of it and it's something that can be easily fixed x

Dodie66 · 12/11/2018 18:15

Iev got this esymptoms and have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.. look it up online and see if it fits

Rosalie2109 · 12/11/2018 18:34

I've had all the same symptoms as you for a few years and have recently been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, took a few years to get a diagnosis after doctors ruled out everything else

Dodie66 · 12/11/2018 19:33

Same here Rosali2109 I’ve had the symptoms for years and only got the diagnosis when my gp agreed to refer me to a rheumatologist who did some pressure tests and noted all my symptoms
