Has anyone tried these? were they are success or failure for you? If successful what brand are you using? Are they better than non multifocal contacts for you or are they a big compromise? Thanks

Failure - can't read anything. Have given up
Contacts (after 25 years). Now
Wear varifocal specs
Full time

I love them! Have had them about 2 years now - Activue - no issues, could see fine within minutes of putting them in for the first time and I’m quite short sighted. Have worn contact lenses for 20+ years and find them no different to ‘normal’ lenses

Carikube · 11/11/2018 22:39

I've had them for a few weeks (Acuvue). Am finding them comfortable but this is the first time I've used dailies instead of monthlies so it's probably more that. I've got astigmatism and have been told that i have to lose the correction for that in order to get the multifocal. It hasn't been a problem so far but it doesn't feel like a revolution either so i guess the jury is still out on this one.

Good to hear they work well for some. Does anyone also know their distance prescription for those who are having success with them ? tnx

Failure for me.
I now wear one for distance, one for reading.
Use specs for anything really close though.

I've had them for about 3 years now. The brand I use is Clariti. My prescription is -2.5 / -3.75 (I have some astigmatism in one eye hence the difference in prescription).

Overall I'm pretty happy with them. There is some compromise between near and distance vision. My distance vision isn't as sharp as it used to be with non-multifocal contact lenses but that's the compromise in order to be able to read things iPhone closer to me. (I actually had a long chat with my optician about this recently when I was having an eye test / contact lenses review).

The other difference I've noticed is the brightness of lights when I drive at night with my multifocals. Somehow streetlights, car headlamps etc seem brighter, as if there's some sort of filter on. It's weird. I am a little more wary driving at night now and for a longer 5+ hours journey, I might try my varifocal glasses instead of my contacts.

They don't make them strong enough for my distance prescription (-10) but I am having success with having one eye slightly undecorrected to help with close work.

ImDivingIn · 12/11/2018 20:45

I use acuvue and also have varifocal glasses. The contact lenses were much easier to get used to than the specs.
They are both great.

domesticslattern · 12/11/2018 20:51

Failure.
Just can't get on with them. My astigmatism doesn't help.
I can get about with them in if not at work/ close reading.

Notadrill · 16/11/2018 00:23

I'm just having a trial of contacts (first time user - was just using shop-bought 'readers' before). Both mono and varifocal lenses.

Based on my first day of mono, I'd say I'm looking forward to the varifocal as the mono compromised too much on distance vision (which was previously good) and hasn't really allowed me to read close up. Think they try to keep the gap between the two values as close as is feasible....

Am hoping the varifocal contacts are better as I'm fed up of constantly putting my reading glasses on and off.

Jbck · 16/11/2018 00:36

Failed for me sadly, gas permeable, one eye, centre of my vision just couldn’t be aligned other eye perfect but it left me with a bad ghost in left eye.
Tried monthlies too but didnt help.
Back to mono-vision but starting to feel distance deteriorating and will lose a lot in reading if I power up so booking an appt to discuss shortly.

Unobtainable · 16/11/2018 00:49

Ive worn them for four years but have had trials with four different types to eventually find the right ones.

I went with Cooper Vision in the end - v expensive at £34 a month but worth it. They take a while to get used to due to the thickness and the dual nature of the correction. I agree with the pp who mentioned struggling with night vision. Ive got 20/20 vision with them though so cant complain.

My prescription is:
-2.75
-3.00
+1.5 for reading
I have astigmatism too.

The worst thing I find is lipid build up (the white stuff in the corner of your eye. I never had that before.
