Did you get crippling backache when your child started to crawl/stand?

Actually, it's more like bone ache, right down my spine and the front of my thighs. It actually kept me awake last night and I had no idea what was causing it. Then today at a playgroup someone pointed out to me that constantly being bent over helping DS to walk is probably doing it. Hadn't thought of that! I've been none stop for a week since he learnt to pull himself up and I've lost 10 pounds running around after him! (Well, that and barely any carbohydrates!)

Anyway, if this is what it is - what can I do about it? Should I take painkillers? Do yoga? And does this stage pass when they start walking or does it just get worse?!

Yes I got the same when teaching my daugther to walk. It helped doing some cat stretching (hands and knees on floor stretching back up and down). Hanging from the doorframe helped as well. Yoga might be a good idea.

Cheers maisemor! Will def try cat stretching (right now as it goes!) swiftly followed by some ibuprofen - it's really horrible isn't it?!

It gets better..especially when they grow just that bit taller and can hold one hand to walk. I gave into nurofen a couple of times .
Well done on the 10lbs

PinkTulips · 19/06/2007 13:11

yep, i have a dodgy back anyway but it gets horrendous when they're learning to move (ds is starting to learn to walk atm and i've been kept awake every night by the ache

Cheers everyone, cos being the hypochondriac that I am I was worried I had some sort of bone disease or something but obviously hunching over tiny child is much more logical explanation!

You are def. not being a hypochondriac with this one. Even my hubby remembers how sore his back got.

Yes sorry forgot to say, well done on the 10 pounds.

Yes, and sorry to say nothing helped hugely except dd learning to walk on her own. I saw osteopaths, physios, took nurofen....and am about to start that whole phase all over again with dd2

I think Pilates helped the most, but hard to find time to keep it up! Well done on the 10lbs, if you wanted to lose them that is
