I broke my wisdom tooth a while ago, made a dentist appointment which isn't until next month! But it wasn't painful at all so I wasn't too bothered.
I woke up at 3am this morning in the most intense pain, I've never felt anything so bad.
I called the dentist back this morning and they say they absolutely cannot fit me in any sooner, so have made a Dr's appointment in the hope that he can give me some strong painkillers. Do you think he will or will he ust send me back to my dentist?
Also, my tooth isn't actually hurting so much now, although the whole side of my face is a bit tender, and I think I was probably grinding my teeth or clenching my jaw in my sleep that made me wake up in so much pain. Is there anything I can do to try and stop myself from doing that??

Any help very much appreciated

can you not get an emergency appt at the dentist, they will charge you about £40 to be seen or ask if there is any cancellations if they can contact you.

I told dentist it was an emergency they still said they couldn't get me in, but am an nhs patient and couldn't afford to pay £40 anyway
They did say they'd let me know of any cancellations though, just need to keep my fingers crossed I suppose, and pray that the dr will give me something in the meantime!

I feel your pain! Quite literally actually, I've been up awake all night with toothache for at least a week that comes on everytime I lie down! I have an appointment tomorrow and I'm really scared to go cos it means either a deep filling or an extraction.

If you call NHS direct they have a dental line they will put you through to, who can refer you to an emergency dentist in your area. Just stress that you're in a tremendous amount of pain and paracetamol aren't cutting it. You can't suffer for a month!

If you don't usually pay for prescriptions you won't have to at the emergency dentists, but when I've gone there in the past when I was working, I think they took £11 off me for putting in a temporary filling, so not TOO bad.

In the meantime, take your painkillers every 4 hours, I think you can take paracetamol and ibruprofen at the same time (I'm no doctor though, I'm you aren't pregnant at the moment!!) neat alcohol such as whisky or vodka can help if rubbed on the gum around the area, but I'd avoid oil of cloves as it's so damaging to your lips and gums. Also try a warm hot water bottle held gently against your face, and keeping distracted with funny films etc

Best of luck getting an emergency appointment, hope it calms down for you, there's nowt worse than bad toothache!

Thanks Have just gotton back from Dr who was boody useless, he just sent me to the chemist. Chemist recommended painkillers I already have at home, so all in all that was a waste of everybodies time!

will try nhs direct now

Well, I made the mistake of going to my doctors a few years back when I had two large sore lumps emerge on my gums, not what I would call a dental problem, and she actually shouted at me, saying "We DO NOT DEAL with dental problems! You will have to go to Accident and Emergency at the hospital" - didn't even look in my mouth.

We went to A&E and were there 5 hours in total, only to be told they were just very inflamed mouth ulcers! If my doctor had even bothered to look she could have diagnosed that for herself. So I know what doctors are like with what they consider to be "not their problem"

How are you feeling, bored? Still in pain or did you manage to get an emergency appointment?

Just thought I'd tell you, I was in tesco's today and they had this tiny tube of oral pain relief gel for topical application to the gums when you have toothache. It was about £4.50, can't remember the name of it though. Black tube.

I had my appointment today, she shoved in another temporary filling and gave me a course of 5 antibiotics. So it's still mildly aching, ffs!!
