Migraine Torture and an elusive protocol.

Can anyone help me understand this please.
I suffer abdominal stasis migraine twice a month. I vomit or evacuate everything, most months need a GP home visit because I need a metroclopramide injection.

I am prescribed 12 rizatriptan melts and two sumatriptan injections.
I would like to swap 12 rizatriptan melts (only work occasionally if I'm not dehydrated) and instead have 12 sumatriptan injections.
So the total triptan each month are 12 not 14 and I have enough for two migraines.
After a bit of tooing and froing I got a really snotty letter from GP telling me the protocol says no and she isn't going to ignore two neurologists, two GPS and a pharmacist oh and NICE.

I've searched and the only protocol I can find is USA related.

Can anyone signpost or shed light on it?
I actually want less drug just a reliable way to administer it.

Also take propanalol, pregabalin and wear a daily travel sick patch as prevention.

It's such a specialist area your GP is only going to do this on advice from your neurologist. The request would have to come direct from them.

Holidayshopping · 07/11/2018 22:53

Is it the GP prescribing or the neurologist? How long does that prescription last for?

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 07/11/2018 23:26

Your GP will be acting on advice from the neuro.

Why not pay for a private consultation with the neuro and ask him/her ?

Slavetominidictator · 07/11/2018 23:43

I feel your pain. I'm currently struggling with my GP about medication to combat my migraines. They restrict triptans too.
I'm about to see a private neurologist (although I wonder if it's peri menopause behind it all so I should actually see a gynaecologist first or even instead).
Anyway, I'm afraid I am no use re the protocol but am very interested to hear what you end up doing.

AnnaMagnani · 08/11/2018 08:42

Slave paying to see a private neurologist was the best thing I ever did for my migraine - although he was also v clear I couldn't have more than 6 triptans a month or I risked my migraine getting worse. Make sure you see someone with a special interest in migraine.

Queef if your request is all about delivery rather than quantity, I'd suggest contacting your neurologist. Or at this point, seeking a referral to a refractory migraine clinic.

ShovingLeopard · 08/11/2018 08:47

Why not call your consultant's secretary, explain the problem, and ask if you could have an amended prescription communicated to the GP?

TheQueef · 08/11/2018 11:09

Thanks for this.
I've seen a private neurologist (it's the same team as nhs) and had my nhs appointment.
They mainly concentrate on prevention which I'm desperate for but I'm convinced won't happen while I have ovaries.
My migraine pattern has followed my 28 day cycle and I have filled in the diary for two years.

I didn't think to contact secretaries I'm doing that today.
They are more likely to know than the gp.

I hate admitting this but my pain threshold has vanished.
I used to be a strong kerblunderer now a tummy ache can put me in bed.
I'm either dying from pain dying from post or pre drone or waiting to die from it.
I know I'm going to be sacked from work because of it, don't care I work for Capita, I won't be able to get a new job though and that scares me.

It's taken over my life and left me a snuffling wuss.

Have you done something to manage your cycle? Cerazette was great for me in terms of cycle elimination as I also used to be migraine every 28 days like clockwork.

Commiserations - it does take over your life and everyone just thinks 'it's only a headache'.

TheQueef · 08/11/2018 16:59

I had a Mirena in four years ago Anna and GP gave me Depo recently. Had norehisterone too.

My poor Dad has learnt things about my cycle you wouldn't believe Grin
