Am I the only one who feels a little guilty when giving DS Medised?

DS is 11 months old and have probably only given him Medised 5 or 6 times - but I always feel guilty doing it as in the back of my mind, I am a little pleased that I will get a good nights sleep!

DS is bunged up tonight and would not settle so I gave him a spoonful an hour ago and not a peep since!

Oh same here!

Beauregard · 18/06/2007 21:33

Doesn't work on my dd's!

imaginaryfriend · 18/06/2007 21:33

I do feel guilty and the only times I've ever given it to dd is when she's got a raging fever and can't sleep because of it. I think maybe half a dozen times in her life and she's nearly 5. It zonks her out in a not very good way and she's like she's got a 'hangover' the next day so not worth it generally.

akaJamiesMum · 18/06/2007 21:34

Don't feel guilty - my DH would have dosed DS every single night if I'd allowed him.

Just enjoy.

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 21:34

Ceebee! Hello! DD had medised this evening as she is teething. I gave her some an hour before bed, she has been grouchy all day, and she fell asleep in my arms in her nursery, and not a peep since either!

DS is poorly? poor little man. How is he doing apart from that?

TranquilaManana · 18/06/2007 21:35

oh, i used to - does that count?

(before i was overrun with the little buggers.. drug em all i say, day and night. morphine works best for nighttimes, caffiene first thing.)

(er....that was a joke btw. just in case. you know what it gets like round here sometimes...)

ChippyMinton · 18/06/2007 21:36

Gave it to DD once and she seemed to be awake but asleep and having a nightmare at the same time. It was horrible to watch. As soon as the dose wore off she was fine. Bottle went straight in the bin. I ad a similar reattion when i took nightnurse, don't know if ther's any connection.

Ceebee74 · 18/06/2007 21:36

Hey Pav - sorry your clever little DD is suffering too. Think DS is teething too - hence the bunged up nose (seems to be his main symptom when teething).

DD2 has been snotty since about day 4 of her life (she's now 3.5) and occassionally she gets such bad colds that she can't sleep for coughing. We use Medised then to dry up the snot that's going down the back of throat and making her cough and it seems to work a treat. Think it does aid sleep but ultimately it's the best thing for helping DD out on her very worst nights, so I don't feel bad about it at all

NikkiBFG · 18/06/2007 21:37

Oooh glad I'm not the only one!! The minute DS gets cranky, DH is like oh medised the bugger and I'm like nooooo way!! Only save it for when I know he really needs a good nights sleep i.e bunged up with a cold, teething etc but you do feel secretly pleased at the rest don't you!!

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 21:38

Ceebee - today is the first day she has been in a clingy sad, contemplative mood all day, since, well since she was born! Would not let me put her down for a moment, did not want to eat food, did not want to sleep, dribbled like she had a tap in her mouth. Hardly smiled at all .

Hence the medised, oh and some wonderful baby oragel.

Ceebee74 · 18/06/2007 21:38

Thanks all I am so glad I am not alone in my guilt

milkbeard · 18/06/2007 21:39

i do same, only given it 5-6 times,dd now 1, but always feel guilty as well cos know going to have good night. mind was in chemist the other week and pharmacist told me only to give it ocassionally as recently a few babies have been hospitalised from having too much as can cause heart probs if given alot

RBH · 18/06/2007 21:40

At what age do you give it to your kids? Think the bottle says 3 months but a doctor told me not to use it til a year. However as this is the same doctor who failed to diagnose gallstones over a two year period, leading to me spending Christmas in hospital with pancreatitis, I don't know whether she was talking garbage.

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 21:40

Oh dear, its not worked that well, she has just woken up. Sounds very upset. Giving her two mins...

IdrisTheDragon · 18/06/2007 21:40

We medisedded DD tonight. Feel a little guilty but not that much, which in itself makes me feel a bit guilty.

Ceebee74 · 18/06/2007 21:40

Pav - poor DD. Hopefully the tooth will come through and she will return to her delightful little self.

Nikki - I only use it on nights like this when he is snotty - I never use it during the day. And tbh, calpol seems to do the same trick on him but I try not to use that too often either

REIDmylips · 18/06/2007 21:41

hya ceebee, i have given ds magic medised in the past too. Know what you mean about the guilty feeling (but the peaceful nights sleep is good though )

He hates the taste of it and now just spits it back out at me! last time he had an ear infection and simply couldnt sleep because of the pain, i put it in his bottle so that he(and dh & i of course) could get a good nights sleep!

ChorusLine · 18/06/2007 21:42

I used it when DS was teething as Calpol/Nurofen didn't seem to touch him. I reccomend it to all!

stressteddy · 18/06/2007 21:43

I used to give it all the time
More than I really dare mention because I know I'll get lots of emoticons from everyone
He hasn't had it for about 3 months now but if he needed it tomorrow he would have it

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 21:43

Gone in, stroked her cheeks, told her I love her. Straight back to sleep again. She has 8 teeth already ceebee! I did not know there were anymore due yet! . I cant think where it will go! They have all come in twos so she prob has two coming through now. Poor lovely baby

Ceebee74 · 18/06/2007 21:44

Reidy - lol at the spitting out. I am more concerned as DS got VERY excited at the sight of the bottle and spoon this evening - he was bouncing up and down on the bed waving his hands.

DH thinks we may have a Calpo/medised junkie on our hands

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 21:45

Medised is great to use. I use it sparingly, like ceebee's DS, DD gets snotty so it helps dry it up, and when she is v tired she wont sleep so it gives it a kick start, but never during the day either. Calpol, if anything at all.

NikkiBFG · 18/06/2007 21:47

I couldn't sleep the other night so took x3 ml spoonfuls of medised myself! Tasted gross but worked a bloody treat I tell you!!!

pavlovthecat · 18/06/2007 21:49

Nikki - LOL! I might remember that myself when I cant find the paracetamol!
