Umbilical Hernia! Help!!

Iv had an umbilical hernia since DD was born 2 years ago Went to the doctors they sent me for a scan. scan confirm the hernia and then was referred to the surgeon the surgeon basically told me that my BMI was too high to fix it and I should finish having children first also, which was fair enough, I've not had many problems with it over the last year but just burning pain every now and again and the hernia sticking out more than usual.

Today I started to feel the burning pain which was not out of the ordinary and then it started to increase and got to the point where I was in excruciating pain from my bellybutton up to my ribs it lasted for around 40 minutes and then all of a sudden just stopped at one point though the top half of my stomach looked like I was nine months pregnant has anybody else had this and what should I do should I ask for another ultrasound to see if the hernia has got worse or just leave it, Like the surgeon said?

Go back to your GP & explain what happened - it may be an argument for reassessing the balance of risk & benefit in fixing the hernia. It sounds like something (fat/bit of bowel) may have got stuck in the hernia for a bit or that the blood flow may have been a bit ‘squeezed’. If it happens again in the meantime go to A&E. (COI - not a surgeon/GP, but am a doc).

Yep this happened to me when I had a hernia. Periodically a tiny bit of your innards gets trapped in the space and pinched, which cuts off the blood supply. Left untreated it’s an emergency. I was lucky in that when it happened I could (painfully) physically pop it back in but you definitely need to see your GP if this is happening. What you don’t want is to end up having emergency surgery to fix it.

@ladydickisathingapparently this has never happened before! I literally would rather give birth that this happen again!!
Thank you both I'm going to ring GP in the morning...

I did, easy op - only took about 15 minutes and it was a quick recovery. Mine became a priority because the trapping was happening more frequently (I was told this was because it was a very small hole). So probably best your GP is aware this has happened but don’t worry unduly. Horrible pain though, isn’t it?

Sorry to hijack OP, ladydickisathingapparently - did you get it fixed laparoscopically? Was it stitched or with a mesh? Did you have GA?

I've just had an Ultrasound and have a small 1cm hernia. Likely had it since DS2 was born. Most of the time it doesn't bother me but I have had unbelievable pain when part of my innards gets trapped and stuck.

Word of warning, you may not be entirely pain free after op. Mine was repaired in 2012 and I still get tugging and pain despite mesh. Mine is only occasionally and I wonder if it's linked to weight gain (1.5 stone since op).
