Whooping cough - adults

Has anyone had whooping cough as an adult? How did you feel?
I'm waiting blood results but pretty sure it is. Started with cough/generally unwell, and went down hill, doctor thought chest infection so took antibiotics for a week but wasn't better
Went back and doctor prescribed different antibiotics and a week off work.
The next day the very deep coughing started and vomiting, loads of egg white texture mucous .... just can't sleep as violent coughing wakes me up
Sometimes wee a little due to violent coughing
I'm a month in now, last night I had a reasonable night sleep, don't need to sleep sitting up so much now, but feel totally exhausted still.
Today was the first time I felt like I wanted some vegetable soup rather than feeling I have to eat. Seem to be drinking fruit Juice, Cherry coke and hot manuka honey with fruit juice and the occasional glayva at night which helps my throat

Anybody else had this, any supporting comments of when this'll get better Sad

Totally fed up now

So you have no experience of healthcare in the uk?

Actually even where you are - what about poor people who couldn't afford vaccination privately? Who are likely to be actually more vulnerable to infections?

Basically, I'm back to my previous stance, clearly we need an additional whooping cough vaccine for adults. Good old fashioned preventive medicine.

Yes I may ask for another vaccine once this has gone - twice is enough for me thank you 🤢

Well I did work for the NHS for a number of years but not in a role where I routinely vax’d (apart from tetanus boosters) and I freely admit I have not kept up with your schedule. I do understand you have menB where we currently don’t and I’m sure there are other differences but no I haven’t kept up with your system nor performed a detailed comparison with ours.

Well the ‘poor people’ as you call them get done on the house as babies, toddlers and teens. They also get done on the house when they are older. Yes, they do have a gap in the middle. However here there is no notable increase in the incidence of people receiving social payments presenting as adults as opposed to those without (this would be captured as the system links an additional low income health care card with their standard health care card). I’m not sure about the current situation regarding this in the UK though but I’m sure you can enlighten me.

Like anything it would be fantastic if everyone can be done at every point but the magical pot of money just doesn’t exist and if the pot is increased you have to work out if this is needed more than 1000 other things that are needed and currently not funded. If a fair portion of the population pay privately (it’s affordable), combined with the standard ages done as per schedule it contributes to the herd. By no means perfect but better than nothing.

It’s not foolproof either. I caught it 2 years after my last vax. As sick as I was I’m sure I would have been sicker had I not had it.

Good Luck flumpybear for your Interview - it will at least make your interview memorable if you do whoop your way through it - could catch on Smile
