Freaking out...

Had a blood test a couple of weeks ago.
Checked for the usual along with ca125 and coeliac screening.

Just had a letter through the post referring me to hospital at their gastro department!

Does this mean something has come back positive?!
Could it be the coeliac? It wouldn't be the ca125 would it?? They wouldn't refer me to gastro for that surely?!

I'm freaking out and think all sorts...
Trust me to get it on a Saturday morning when I can't even phone the doctors to find out 😭

Can anyone help?

I would have thought abnormal coeliac results more likely to cause a referral to gastro. If it was ca125 it would be a gynae case?
Have you heard anything from your GP?

YeOldeTrout · 03/11/2018 12:59

What does 'check for the usual' mean, what is usual for you?
Why are U so scared, I assume the tests are to help you fix a problem so this is the first part of fixing the problem, what is scary about that?

Do you have health anxiety, op?

Birdie69 · 03/11/2018 13:03

The gastro department deals with your digestive system, so you might have some problem with the coeliac. It isn't the ca 125 because the refers to your gynaecoclogical system.

Thanks all. I know I should be pleased to get to the bottom of things, it's just caught me unawares as the receptionist told me everything had come back normal (though she hadn't had the coeliac results back at that point... I know I should trust her when she says the others were normal but I'm unsure of how much the receptionist can tell you)

The things they checked for were
Full blood count
TSH
Bone profile
Renal
Liver
Lipid profile
ESR
Hba1c
Ca125
TTG

I suppose I do have some degree of health anxiety but only when I have symptoms of something...

I did have a text asking me to book a telephone consultation but I've had such a busy week I thought I'd sort it Monday... I didn't think the doctor would do things over the telephone if there was something wrong. Clearly I'm quite daft.

The cancer marker blood test used by Gastro tends to be C19-9, most relevant to pancreas and colon. I think Ca125 is specifically Gynae, tho' I'm a Gynae patient who is routinely tested for both, as I had a particular variety of ovarian tumour.

If the receptionist said that your bloods were OK, then it must be connected to coeliac - which isn't as worrying?

I expect the GP wanted to explain why you've been referred. You wouldn't need a face to face appointment for that.

It's good that they tested your Ca125, because sometimes gastric symptoms are caused by ovarian issues and patients waste months being investigated by Gastro to no purpose and their diagnosis and treatment are delayed.

So no need to freak out. You're one step closer to being treated.

Thank you @Thymeout yes, I'm very grateful that they checked the ca125 markers given my symptoms. And I'm very glad they appear to be normal!
There's definitely worse things than being diagnosed with coeliac disease (not that I have been yet).

The letter just took me by surprise tbh. When I had a blood test a couple of years ago, my ferritin levels came back as very low, the receptionist phoned me and told me the dr wanted to see me so I just assumed they would do the same this time round, had they found anything unusual. I guess things have changed since then.
