If you watch the medical papers written on coconut and teeth, you might change your mind.

This website makes videos out of science and facts not some instagram blogger.

@KingIrving thank you for your reply. Had trouble viewing the video but I watch most of it and also read the below text - definitely an interesting point of view

Do you know anyone who brushes their teeth with coconut from time to time though?

I had a go for a few days, coconut oil and bicarbonate of soda, I couldn't stick it, was making me heave Envy

KingIrving · 01/11/2018 07:58

But why would you do it? For what purpose?
I use it on my hair and body but not inside me and this includes inside my mouth

How are you getting fluoride though, if not through toothpaste. A lot of why we are recommended to brush twice daily is to get that fluoride application twice a day, and to remove plaque too, obviously.

Just had a little google there and "oil pulling" done correctly apparently involves swirling coconut oil around your mouth for twenty minutes!

Personally I would wait until further research is conducted before risking my dental health and spending nearly an hour a day with a mouth full of oil.

Vitalogy · 01/11/2018 08:12

I didn't think OP was talking about oil pulling, just brushing with.

HereForTheLineEyes · 01/11/2018 08:33

The study published in the Nigerian Medical Journal that proves that coconut oil is effective at reducing plaque was conducted using oil pulling, not just brushing with it as you would with toothpaste.

Personally I'd stick to a fluoride toothpaste as we know it strengthens enamel and protects against tooth decay. The risks associated with fluoride, such as dental fluorosis, occur at consistently high doses, mostly under the age of 8 when adult teeth are forming. You don't achieve doses at this level with just twice daily toothbrushing.

Weighing up the risks and benefits I wouldn't make the change to coconut oil. We only get one set of adult teeth.

Yeh I haven't brushed with coconut oil and I am currently using a Holland and Barrett toothpaste which is free of SLS which I think was the product which was burning my gums. There were layers and layers of my gums coming away the minute I stopped the toothpaste with it in the side effects subsided and the stopped. Honestly couldn't believe it. I still floss and my teeth are in very good shape.

Oil pulling is interesting but think I will wait for further testing and reports to be carried out.

There is fluoride in the Holland and Barrett toothpaste so I will continue with that.

I have to use a mild toothpaste too OP. I've got a nice one atm from H&B, their AloeDent triple action one, very mild and minty.

al2002 · 03/11/2018 22:05

Sensodyne Pronamel is SLS free and has the correct amount of Fluoride present.

mrsd2be · 03/11/2018 22:21

I'd just double check the SLS free tp you're using has fluoride, otherwise you're leaving yourself open to caries (decay)

purplepigs · 03/11/2018 22:24

I have checked with dentist and he said the level of fluoride in the SLS free toothpaste is fine. I feel quite relieved now. Didn't know that sensodyne was SLS free thanks !

al2002 · 04/11/2018 10:22

Only pronamel is SLS free from the Sensodyne range OP.

purplepigs · 05/11/2018 00:00

How about sensodyne daily care
I have looked at the ingredients and can't see SLS and have also look on the website and it advertises the daily care as SLS free

Is this SLS allergy common?
More common than I first thought?
