How bad does the MMR rash get? (anxious PFB-type fretting going on...)

poor dd... had the MMR last week and while we were warned that she might get a rash i really wasn't expecting it to be this awful. she's covered in it, and she's been really, really unhappy for the past few days and sleeping loads. i feel terrible for her...

do you mind telling me how long it lasted, based on your experiences? thanks.

Ds2 had it 12 days after mmr and was really quite unwell for about 4 days. High temp and rash all over.

4 days? right. the bloody hv said 'she might get a wee rash on her tummy, but it won't affect her'. ta.
did you just give calpol? do you think they itch?

My ds had a bad reaction to the mmr too, about 10 days after the jab, he was covered head to foot and didn't eat for nearly a week, he also slept loads. He was totally over it after a week though. I just gave him loads of cuddles and extra patience They didn't seem to bother him itching wise, but we kept him dosed up with medised, it calms the fever but also helps them sleep.

lol, dd actually asked for medised tonight... that's why i thought she might be in pain.

Medised has been my greatest friend in ds's short two year life

Aitch · 17/06/2007 21:39

was a little wheni realised that she can actually say 'medised' quite clearly at 18 months.

No need for . Medised is our friend .

weebleswobble · 17/06/2007 21:45

oops, might pay to read all replies before repeating what's there already

foxinsocks · 17/06/2007 21:46

yes, I reckon we had it for the best part of 5-7 days but only unwell for half of that

was a PITA

didn't react at all to the booster I seem to remember though

DD is like this at the moment. She's only just recovered from the pox and now has a new rash and is tired and irritable again (has been so since Saturday). It began about 12 days after the MMR so I think it must be related to that. Hope it gets better soon.

got this off the bupa site:

Side-effects and safety
It is not possible to say that MMR, or any vaccine, is absolutely safe. Some children do get side-effects to the MMR vaccine, especially after the first injection.

The three different viruses in the vaccine act at different times and may produce the following side-effects.

Six to 10 days after the immunisation, some children may become feverish (this happens to about 1 in 10 children). Some develop a measles-like rash and go off their food.3,7
About one in every 1000 immunised children may have a fit caused by the fever. This is called a "febrile convulsion".3,7
Rarely, children may get mumps-like symptoms (fever and swollen glands) about three weeks after their immunisation.7
Children may get a rash of small bruise-like spots in the six weeks after the vaccination, but this is very rare. If you see spots like these, take your child to your GP to be checked.3,7
Fewer than one child in a million develops encephalitis (infection of the brain) after the MMR vaccine - although there is very little evidence that it is the vaccine that causes it. If a child catches measles however, the chance of developing encephalitis is between one in 200 and one in 5000.7
