Dentists, can you help with my root canal question?

Please. I went yesterday for root canal, I have no idea exactly what he did because I am a chicken and didn't ask, but I had to go to a specialist endodontic place, my own dentist had tried and failed to sort it.

I have a crown on the tooth and this was root canal.

I was in the chair for 2 hours he drilled it and cleaned it out and scraped and it and put stuff in and then he filled it back up.

He said he could see infection in the x ray he took at the start.

Obviously there's no nerve in it, but omg it is so sore today. He said I would "feel" it for a day or two but is this normal I can't eat on that side and there's no way I could drink a hot drink.

At what point do I need to ring him back?

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi, I had a root canal recently. Mine was very sore for about a week. I had a temporary filling in at that point so sounds a bit different.

But it was very painful for at least a week and I was told to expect that.

Obviously ring them if you are worried but ime it is normal.

non working dentist here often it is the buildup of infective fluid in the canal and bone that causes the pain it has nowhere to go so the pressure builds up and pressing on nerve endings in surrounding tissues then when you bite you increase pressure further which is why it hurts even more if you eat.

There has been a buildup in order to see it on xray as it distorts the bone around end of the root tip looking like a black line or in bad cases a blackish circle if the infection is bad you may not be able to reach it all from the canal hence some persist pain it should start to die down in 48 hours but if it starts to swell or get worse ring them up,
because the tooth is dead it has no nerves or blood vessels, antibiotics travel in bloodstream so are rarely the answer to infected canals hope that helps

paracetamol is not an anti-inflammatory so if you can take aspirin or ibuprofen ( don't take if asthmatic) it may be better

if you can only take paracetamol take it with caffeine ie strong cup of coffee

I had two root canals done last year after clenching my teeth into oblivion. One took absolutely ages to settle, and the other was fine right away, despite the endodontist saying it would hurt for a bit. I didn’t get crowns straight away, I had to go back after about a month to make sure all was okay, then I was discharged to my own dentist for them.

I took slow release ibuprofen, then paracetamol on top if I was desperate.

Hope it calms down for you soon.
