Sat next to someone with pnemonia

Hello all,

I sat next to someone with pneumonia today. She announced she had pnemonia, yet still came in.

Is it contagious? I'm really worried. The girl is 22/23 by the way.

Some strains are, some aren't, my husband developed pneumonia, it oresented as a chest infection and wasn't infectious. I didn't catch it and slept beside him every night. Anti biotics knock it on the head normally. Don't worry.

googleismyfriend · 30/10/2018 17:01

If she's come in with an infectious strand that is completely selfish behaviour Angry

You'll be fine. Shell be fine. No need to be concerned.

pastabest · 30/10/2018 17:09

Any chance she is joking/exaggerating?

BrazzleDazzleDay · 30/10/2018 17:16

Iwas hospitalised with it earlier this month. They didnt tell me whether i was infectious or not and they dont do follow up xrays for 4-6 weeks so am i supposed to put my dc and my life on hold until then?

LavenderBush · 30/10/2018 17:24

I had it and nobody else in my family got ill at all - despite cuddling, kissing etc. I was not advised to avoid any of this.

I honestly can't see how she's out and about, though. No way I could have gone anywhere except for medical treatment.

longwayoff · 30/10/2018 17:48

There are different strains of pneumonia and people are affected differently..she's on antibiotics, no worries for others.

She was deadly serious

If she’s out and about it’s some kind of weird pneumonia because when I had it I could barely get to hospital to get treated. It’s the most ill I’ve ever been. So I wouldn’t worry op, sounds like she’s exaggerating a tad!

This makes me relieved, thank you Flowers

There’s different types of pneumonia teddy just like the the flu. Some knock you out and some are lesser.

I sincerely hope she is exaggerating! She was chesty coughing and her skin around her eyes was red

I just feel like if you know you have pneumonia you shouldn't enter a confined space with fellow students. Some people may have a weak immune system and it could be very dangerous for them

Both my nans died from pneumonia, its very dangerous for the elderly. I'm not too sure about different strains etc though. Are you sure she's not exaggerating? But I think if anyone is ill with something more than a cold then they should stay at home!

googleismyfriend · 30/10/2018 18:45

Are you sure she's not exaggerating? I am positive she's not exaggerating, she's the normal, sensible (or so I thought) type and not attention seeking

Exactly... what if someone catches it of her and passes it to an elderly relative? So inconsiderable and selfish

Had the pneumonia vaccine last year, protects against SEVEN variants. I have had pneumonia twice. First time I couldn't get out of bed for days and was very ill. Second time, felt pretty bad, racking cough, feverish, but ambulant. Single mother, 2 kids to walk to and from school. Bed not an option. She's probably not exaggerating.

Bombardier25966 · 30/10/2018 18:54

But you still don't know if her condition is contagious. You're being very judgemental on something you know nothing about. Did you not think to ask her?

Bluntness100 · 30/10/2018 18:55

My husband was out and about, as said, it presented as a chest infection. It may not be contagious and she knows this.

Some strains of pneumonia, especially in younger healthy people won't feel more than a mild chest infection.

If it's not contagious and she's feeling well enough, she doesn't need to confine herself.

LizzieBennettDarcy · 30/10/2018 18:58

I had pneumonia a couple of winters again, and ended up in A & E on Boxing Day. I ended up on steroids, inhalers, antibiotics and couldn't get out of bed for a fortnight. I've truly never felt so unwell.

She could affect someone in the environment with a compromised immune system. As a diabetic, I'd be pretty pissed off tbh.

What am I supposed to say? "Ahh hello there, are you contagious?" Isn't that rude?

We don't isolate patients in hospital with pneumonia like we would with flu so you don't need to worry too much

Notquiteagandt · 01/11/2018 08:29

I had walking pneumonia. I felt like I had a bad cough nothing more. About a month later had blood tests for something unrelated. The results showed I had pnemonia in my blood. (This strain apparently leaves traces/scars in blood)

Anyways I paniced as id been going uni and work etc. Got told not to worry as wasnt contagious.

LondonLassInTheCountry · 04/11/2018 23:32

I had pneumonia and was on a very small ward with two people currently on chemo!

Last year i had pneumonia and was on a neuro surgical ward

LondonLassInTheCountry · 04/11/2018 23:34

Hospitals dont isolate patients with pneumonia
