Fizzing/ popping/ crackling while breathing out

Hi. I have come down with a cold - bit of a sore throat, slight runny nose, tickly cough. I don't feel particularly unwell and have no fever. The weird bit is that when I lie down, my "out breaths" feel fizzy, like eating popping candy, but in my upper chest or throat. It sounds like a rattly chest as if I am really ill. But I feel fine. Is it just air moving through mucus?

It might be a chest infection.
I had crackles with both pleurisy and pneumonia, I'd get it checked out.

I have asthma and crackle on an out breath in the winter. Does it improve if you cough a bit to clear your throat?

oldbirdy · 30/10/2018 13:06

slipper - not really, after coughing it creaks and fizzes a bit more. It's very strange.

I’ve had this before. In the back of my throat and oesophagus it felt like, rather than lungs. A sort of clicking and creaking. I mentioned it to the doctor as it was driving me nuts at night. She thought it was mucus that I’d swallowed sticking to the back of my throat and dripping down. Nice. It did stop after a couple of days.

Do you feel ok otherwise?

bath yes....I sound like I'm at death's door but feel fine (apart from tickly cough and being kept awake at night).

It's an upper respiratory tract infection. Nothing to worry about if you feel well and don't have a temp. It's just the cold virus in your airway, lower than your throat but higher than your lungs. There will be a bit of extra inflammation and mucus there causing the noise. It will pass like a snotty nose passes without any help.
If you get a high temperature then you need to see doc.

Hello! I see this is an old post but I’m experiencing the same and I’m freaking out. Please, if you read this, what happened? Did you go back to the doctor? Did the sound in your throat stop? I’d appreciate some answers:)

I have this as well for a few months now, NO major symptoms of sickness. Just the sound of fire crackles , bubble pops, or pop rocks without the candy in my throat, only when I lay down for the night.(A Dr would never hear this in the office, as I am sitting upright when they use the stethoscope) I did have COVID-long back in 2021. I am thinking this is a" new" common symptom, like so many others more common....after/since COVID...upper respiratory or allergy since. I have no cough, no sore throat oxygen level is great, I am a little stumped. Wake up a little stuffy, then clear all day, then hear it again when I lay down for the night.

I’ve had this twice and both times it was when I had covid.

Hey, I have had this for years now since covid. Drives me insane every night, I saw an ENT who simply told me that 'you must hear it more' inferring I have always had it but now I am more sensitive. I know that is not true, I simply have gunk there all the time. As I sleep with earplugs due to living in the city, it wakes me up as it's in my head, and I can only lie on my side as it is less noisy, and dribble, how cool is that!
Anyone got any tips on how to produce less gunk? I have tried diet, no dairy etc, fodmap, but nothing made a difference.
THANK YOU
Lucy

This is exactly what I have. It’s been driving me crazy could you please tell me if you had any updates?

Jennaxxx · 16/04/2025 06:32

I have had this twice before and now again. I think I've probably got COVID again as my symptoms are similar to the other two times. It's SO annoying and worse when you lie down. Mine only happens on exhale but does improve slightly if I cough up phlegm (soz). Mine cleared up when my infection cleared up the last two times so I'm hoping it'll clear again. My throat this time though is SOOO sore and painful lower in my neck like voice box area, I don't think I've ever had one as bad before.
