Hair in her eye?

3-mo-old dd has a hair in her eye that's about 2 inches long (I think it's one of her own, she was born with a huge mop of hair.) Should I try to get it out somehow? It seems too long to work its way out by itself... She doesn't seem to mind, though...

I'd probably leave it for a while to see if it comes out itself. My DS always had them in his eyes when he was younger and I used to wonder at how he wouldn't notice!

Thanks! If I had a hair like that in my eye I would be going insane, but she's spent the afternoon happily sticking her tongue out at me, so I guess she's ok for now. I'm desperate to try to get it out, but restraining myself.

You take it out. DD had this in the first six months. It doesn't seem to bother babies but it can get infected.

This is how our paediatrician told (and showed) me to do it: Get ophtalmic (sp?) saline solution (sterile salt water) & sterile gauze from pharmacy. Wash hands. Wrap the gauze around your index finger & wet it with solution. Put a drop of solution into the eye. Then with the gauze around your finger, nudge it towards the nose & out of the eye.

It's not as tough as it sounds. If you, your DP or someone you trust has contact lenses you might ask them for help. Decades of poking one's own eye provides good experience.

Good luck!
