Can anyone help by identifying a name the doctor gave me.

Went to the doctors with pink circular itchy patches on me. As soon as she saw them she said she knew what it I was. She even showed me a picture on the internet with the name beneath. It began with p and half way through the long name was something like Rosa. She then said i should get something that is sold over the counter. It is called Dactorkort which turned out to be for athletes foot and contains an anti fungal. She wrote it down together with a couple of other things that I needed unrelated to that problem. However, she didn’t write the name of my problem down. When I got out I realised I couldn’t remember what this long name was.I know it’s a long shot but has anyone got an idea what it could be? Would be grateful.

Pitiryasis rosea

oldbirdy · 26/10/2018 12:18

It's very common.

HappydaysArehere · 27/10/2018 23:22

Thank you oldbirdy. That’s it. It’s a real nuisance. Have you had it yourself? I couldn’t find it on all the sites showing skin complaints but have now looked it up and that is definitely it. Thank you.

My son had it. We thought it was ringworm. He had a real rough time with chest infections and asthma and then got this. He then had a severe chest infection and GP gave him steroids and antibiotics for his chest. The rash cleared up beautifully with the steroids.
He’s not had a recurrence and only had it for a few weeks but iirc, we were warned that it can take quite some time to heal up.

oldbirdy · 27/10/2018 23:42

Hi, yes I had it 30 odd years ago! It lasted probably 6 weeks, was pretty unsightly (all over my chest) but disappeared without treatment and has never come back.

ShovingLeopard · 27/10/2018 23:45

Oh, yes, I got this when I was pregnant. Had loads of patches from the knees up, though thankfully not on my face. Was annoyingly itchy, and went on for ages. Then, just when I thought I would never be rid of it, it went as mysteriously as it came.

MyArris · 27/10/2018 23:49

My son just had this. Given no treatment and it went away in 4 weeks.

LarkDescending · 29/10/2018 18:32

I had it in my 20s. The itching was awful! The hydrocortisone in the Daktacort should soothe your skin.

ladydickisathingapparently · 29/10/2018 18:36

I had it when I was pregnant once, it was insanely itchy. It starts with what they call a herald patch, then they quickly spread (in my case torso mostly). I was told it can start when your immune system is a bit low but would resolve in a few weeks without treatment. Which it did.

HappydaysArehere · 30/10/2018 11:05

Thank you everyone. My herald spot appeared 6 weeks ago and it has spread over my back, shoulders, legs and one foot. The last ones appeared a week ago on my stomach. The Daktacort I tried appeared to make the itching worse so I reverted to Sudacreme and E 4 moisturiser. I will have another go at it in case it does improve with use. I decided to take Piriton at night to help me sleep.

Still got it. It is driving me bad. I am 77 and not the young age which most get it. I feel as if it is going on for ever.Sad

Happydays if it's giving you a lot of discomfort go back to the GP, they can give you a stronger steroid cream. My uncle had it and was quite poorly, you shouldn't have to be suffering with it.

Bombardier25966 · 15/11/2018 09:33

Ask if there is a GP with a specialist interest in dermatology. They might be more sympathetic.

HappydaysArehere · 20/11/2018 10:04

Thank you Bombardier. I keep reading that it is a mild rash which is self limiting. I feel sorry for your uncle. I hope his didn’t go on too long.
I will have to go back to the GP if it continues.

Been back to GP who said now that the problem should have gone in three weeks and because I have some on my legs and on my feet it can’t be Pityriasis. She is referring me and I now have a preliminary appointment for the end of February. My daughter who lives in Norfolk is a nurse. She showed a photo of my back to a GP who says it is Pityriasis. She tells her patients it can go on 4 to 5 months. She has recommended Aqueous cream with mentholin it as it cools the skin. I use aqueous cream anyway. My GP recommended using a dandruff shampoo which I have for an itchy scalp and using it on my body. So what with the itchy scalp which I had before the rash and still have I am hoping that one or the other disappears before Christmas. This has been going on since September and the scalp since July! I am feeling really fed up with both.

Ps to above. My GP gave me Betnovate and the GP in Norfolk recommended Piriton which I am taking.

You could get an appointment with a private dermatologist also if you could afford that.

HappydaysArehere · 05/12/2018 19:07

I have thought of that Seaweed. I have had this for 3 months and was hoping it would have disappeared by now. My daughters friend who is a GP she trusts has told her to tell me that it can last 4 or 5 months. As my appointment is at end of February I was hoping that it would give it a chance to go. Also, I will have to wait for another referral letter and Christmas etc is almost upon us. However, after Christmas if it hasn’t improved I will go down that route. Thank you for your advice
