Hi all - any tips greatly received. Got a dreadful cough and been off sick for 1.5 weeks! Actually feeling loads better but coughing loads still and st night I'm waking up coughing to the point where I'm choking and end up vomiting it's so violent - I have tried sleeping propped up on pillows, on my side and flat on my stomach. I end up at night sleeping on the sofa, facing towards the sofa pillows, propped up with cushions having dreadful nights!
Tried lemsip with decongestant and expectorant - no good Sad
Manuka and hot water with fresh orange is nice but still coughing
I'm sure it's just time, but trying all sorts wth vicks, olbas oil in bath and humidifier ... I'm exhausted and blaauueeggghhhh
Help me with your hints and tips! Thank you

You need to get a cough syrup with codeine or a similar cough suppressant in it. Not sure what's available over the counter. During the day take Exputex to get the phlegm out but at night time a suppressant is what you need to help you sleep.
So go talk to pharmacist or the GP.

Thank you @Seaweed42 I'll pop in to the chemist today

Are you sure it is not whooping cough?

flumpybear · 26/10/2018 22:01

@Vallahalagonebutnotforgotten - funny you say that as I've been on the phone twice to my GP today and I'm having bloods done Monday to check - I've had whooping cough before 40 years ago and I don't recall having immunisations since so yeah it could be 😷

It sounds like whooping cough, my colleague had it last year she was in the same state as you.

flumpybear · 26/10/2018 22:15

@madmum5811 is she ok now? Was it just time til it went?! I'm in bed now dreading the coughing fits that lay ahead Sad

Yep, also immediately assumed whooping cough from your description....took weeks to figure out that’s what DH had and only crossed my mind when one of the dcs started coughing at night with the telltale whoop (really scary noise to hear coming from a child). Blood tests will obv confirm if it is. Knocked DH for six but does get better eventually and actually just knowing what it is and that it will eventually resolve is a relief💐

madmum5811 · 26/10/2018 22:21

She was off work for six weeks and took six months to feel completely well again.

flumpybear · 26/10/2018 22:22

Thanks @Blinkingblimey - glad your family are ok now. Sitting here feeling ok now, pretty hoofing coughing but not tooooo bad just now, but know it's gonna scale up Sad

My DS was taken into hospital with breathing issues when he was 1 yo. I stayed with him until he was properly diagnosed and treated. 2 days after leaving the hospital I started coughing. It didn’t stop for months. GP said I’d contracted a hospital grade infection.my mother caught it from me and developed whooping cough. It lasts about 3 months. Not fun but it will stop. Loads of honey and throat lozenges... loads of water. Wishing you well! It is zero fun.

Blinkingblimey · 26/10/2018 22:26

Just seen your most recent post. DH (& 2 of the dcs😬) was given the hard core antibiotics though was prob a bit late by then. The manuka drink is a good idea. DH also swears by a liquid supplement called Herbetom which you can get from health food stores or even Amazon. It did take quite a while to resolve entirely - but if that’s what it is you’ll most likely be signed off work etc - they’ll want it contained. And before anyone assumes that my dcs weren’t immunised they were all up to date - there are new strains out there that the vacs don’t cover! Best wishes for a speedy recovery flumpybear!

@Blinkingblimey - thank you! All my family are vaccinated except me! My mum didn't do it as there was a scare about the vaccine in the mid 1970's so didn't, then I got it myself aged 4, and she didn't follow up with vaccination saying I'd had it so I'd be ok .... there's a chance I had it when trying for my second child as it had reared it's ugly Head in society again by then (about 7-8 years ago)but I can't recall and guess it's not guaranteed anyway ... humph!

Thanks for all the well wishes Smile

@Froglette16 - that's scary!! Really horrible infections around - I work in a hospital too - albeit not on the wards I do pass millions of sick people each day!
