i recently visited the doctor after having my yearly blood test. i was told as usual that my liver, kidneys, thyroid, diabetes, blood pressure were all ok and my cholesterol was 5.1 which i think is good. then out of the blue the doctor without any explanation announced i have a high risk of a heart attack within the next 10 years. i was in total shock at how casually he announced this and as i couldn't wait to leave to enable myself to get over the shock i forgot to ask him to explain himself. i have always been at a low risk so i don't understand where that came from. while my tests keep coming through clear i am not going to worry but i think it was a very cruel way in which he said it.has anyone else had this unfortunate experience? my husband thinks because the doctor couldn't find anything to pick fault with he decided to say that with no evidence to back it up.

5.1 ‘borderline high’
Your GP will have calculated a QRisk2 score which is the norm to do for yearly check ups once past a certain age - although telling you he was doing it might have been nicer but he did have evidence and he wouldn’t just say it for the sake of it

If you're high risk, is the doctor proposing to put you on statins?

If you are going to begin statins, you may want to go over the side effects in detail with your doctor. Statins can lower CoQ10 levels in the body, and more.

Have a look at the QRisk calculator online and figure out what your risk really is.

Then read Malcolm Kendrick on cholesterol.

5.1 is not a problem.

Mine is around 8 last time I checked and I refuse to take the statins again. Do your own research - you'll find arguements both ways and its your decision
