Can you have somebody with you for gallbladder surgery?

Hi all, just wondering if I'd be allowed in with my mum? She's due to have her gallbladder removed but is very nervous, to the point that she may not even go.. I'd like to be there for her before she gets put under at least?
Or is it a strict no?
Tia

You’ll usually be allowed to stay with her u til she gets taken to the theatre suite but you won’t be able to be with her whilst she’s being put to sleep or during the operation.

Thanks Welsh, understandable with everything being sterile and stuff. I'll get her to ask the consultant if I could at least sit with her until she's taken in, really think that'll help her.
How long does the surgery take do you know? She hasn't been told anything

Usually takes around an hour but by the time she’s off to sleep and wakes up after it could be a couple of hours.

If she's going as a day patient you most likey won't be allowed on the ward with her, depending on the hospital protocol. My DD had day surgery (she was over 21) I had to leave her at the entrance to the day ward, then they rang me when she was ready to be collected. Whiten I had day surgery, in a different hospital, my DH was allowed to come on the ward with me, but not to theatre.

I walked down to theatre in a dressing gown and clambered up into the gurney by myself, if I remember rightly - I didn't have a pre-med. I'm pretty sure they would let you be there up to that point, but maybe call and ask? The nursing staff will be lovely anyway, very reassuring.

Can't remember how long it took and DH can't remember what time I came back up either, but it was 90 mins max (and I had a giant stone they had to break up first).

Honestly I'm a huge wuss and it was fine. Good luck I hope it goes well.

unless my recollection is really poor, you are the resident cholecystectomy expert right?!

Ha ha yes thanks...it’s what I do best Grin

The letter just says inpatient so not sure what they mean but thank you

Never had any issues with people staying with me right until the moment I was taken to be anaesthetised. Hospital will want the patient calm and having you there to look after her will help them. The premed will probably help her, too.

It literally says "dear ms xxx
We are pleased to provide you with the details of your appoint at x hospital as an inpatient
Date: xxxxx
Time: 00.00
Team: xxx
Details of where to go and on the back it says don't eat for 6 hours before. Will she get more info at all? She has a pre op 3 days before the actual operation. I've no idea about any of this stuff so anything is helpful!
She's been waiting 10 months for this appointment so really needs it imo, she can't afford to not go and I fear she'd do that if left alone to get on with it

I went in with my husband. I was on the ward with him and went and got some lunch whilst he actually had the op. I was there when he was brought back up

Smurfybubbles · 25/10/2018 19:31

When I had mine out my Mum was allowed to sit outside just before theater with me, I had no premeds. Then a lovely nurse took me in and held my hand until I was put under as I was very nervous. If they know your Mum is nervous they will look after her!

Pythonesque · 25/10/2018 20:21

Go with her to the pre-op if you can, that could be a good opportunity to check how long you can stay with her beforehand etc.

Nat6999 · 25/10/2018 20:37

My partner was allowed to stay with me until I went to theatre, he sat in the room & watched television while I had my op & was there when I came back.

Shednik · 25/10/2018 21:09

Dh waited with me throughput and they did let him come down to theatre until I was put to sleep. They said they usually only allow that for children but because I'm absolutely phobic about anaesthetic they let him
