Can I have a TV ultrasound if I have my period?

Just that really. I thought I would have finished by my scan on Saturday but I've not even started yet and it's definitely on the way. There's no mention of it on the notes, just that it's fine if you are pregnant or menopausal. Anyone experienced this?

I've been told it's fine by gynae, haven't had to experience it though. I guess it depends on how you are when you have it.. I would likely reschedule if it's heavy and painful but not if you can tolerate it.

Thank you Wendy. That is one of my concerns actually. Not just the practicalities of having it done but that it might be uncomfortable. I might reschedule.

Yes you can - if you’re having an egg collection for IVF your first scan is a day or two into your period. They aren’t uncomfortable normally. If it is then ask them to go more gently.

Thank you Witch. It's not an egg collection but guess the process is the same.

I had one during my period when I was being tested for PCOS and apart from it being a bit more uncomfortable and a tad more embarrassing than usual (when aren't these things anyway...) it didn't affected the scan itself or the results.

If you can I'd say stick with it if it would mean waiting for another appointment and what's to say the timing will be any better then.

Yup, the process will be the same, there’s kind of only one way to do it I think! Sorry, I realised you weren’t having an egg collection - I just mentioned it to try and convey that it’s absolutely normal for them to be performed when you’ve got your period. It’s just a bit messier. It’s not normally uncomfortable because they use loads of lube. I’d much rather have a TV ultrasound than a smear, put it that way!
