Recommendations please - magnesium supplement for managing stress

I started taking ruinously expensive Floradix magnesium liquid a while ago (recommended by a mate) and found it really helped with reducing muscle tension, damping down all the thinky thoughts, and improving sleep quality.

It is however, as mentioned, ruinously expensive. I did loads of googling about types of affordable magnesium that are bio-available, but there aren't any conclusive answers, other than 'magnesium oxide is a waste of time'.

I tried a few other brands - I'm now on Aava Labs magnesium citrate (pressie from my dad) and it's ok I think, but not as amazingly effective as Floradix.

Can anyone recommend a reasonably-priced magnesium supplement that will help with managing stress of wrangling toddler twins, a magic porridge pot laundry basket, and a mouthy 5 year old. ?

I use BetterYou spray and that seems to help my symptoms (mainly restless legs and cramps). But I haven't had another blood test yet, so I don't know if it has increased my magnesium levels at all.

OrdinaryGirl · 23/10/2018 21:04

Ah I take the Better You Vit D spray! Haven't tried the magnesium because have read some reviews saying it's sticky / stings on the skin. Did you find that at all?

It feels a bit weird, not exactly sticky, but I can see what they meant. I put it on right before bed so it doesn't really bother me.

I've only had stinging once, when I increased the number of sprays too quickly. You need to build up gradually to the full amount. I've done that since and it's been fine. Oh, it also stings a lot if you get it on any cuts.

Try taking an Epson salt bath.

HauntedForestier · 23/10/2018 21:35

Sorry, Epsom. You absorb through your skin.

Jellyjumpers · 23/10/2018 21:52

I found the spray stung a bit at first. I went away with out it and a couple of days of epson salt baths stopped this from happening. I did not find this unpleasant thoullgh.

OrdinaryGirl · 23/10/2018 22:45

Yeah the Epsom baths are lovely but I don't have the time to have them regularly enough to have an effect and the amount of the proper Epsom salt needed to make a difference through the skin makes it about £3 a bath. 😳

How much is the Floradix one? It sounded so effective for you, I'd carry that on and just economise elsewhere. It sounds like you loved it.

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 23/10/2018 23:20

Hi!
Could you let me know the name of the Floradix one you used? My stress is on overdrive at the moment (particularly tricky time and work and home) and I’m willing to pay to help me get through it with my sanity. I’ve googled and there are several, but none say ‘for stress’. Any thoughts on which one is best for stress, or stress targeted?

Thank you!

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 23/10/2018 23:22

PS and I agree with WhatsGoingOnEh if you have found one that works for you, I would stick with it and make economies elsewhere to keep it up. After all, if you buy one that is not effective (yet half the price) haven’t you just wasted all that money?

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 24/10/2018 10:56

Hi
So I went out and bought the Floradix Magnesium Mineral Drink which seemed to be the most likely one the OP was talking about. (There was another magnesium one with calcium, but this seemed safer for what I want). To someone who asked how much, it was $28 AUD (I’m Australian) for a 250ml bottle. Recommended doses are 20ml/day so this should last for 12 days, which makes it $2.33 AUD a day. So half as much as the Epsom salt bath someone else recommended above!

I’m really hoping it will be as effective as the OP said originally. OP, if you come back, how long did it take before you noticed a difference?

EggysMom · 24/10/2018 10:58

the amount of the proper Epsom salt needed to make a difference through the skin makes it about £3 a bath

Only if you buy the stupidly small, stupidly high price packets from a chemist. If you buy online, you can get a huge tub for a far more sensible price. We use it weekly for our autistic son.

maxthemartian · 24/10/2018 11:31

I use magnesium glycinate which is great, very bio-available, but it's not cheap either unfortunately.

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 24/10/2018 17:33

WhatsGoingOnEh yes, that’s the one I bought today. Had some tonight, and now trying to sleep.....

Jellyjumpers · 24/10/2018 20:41

Big bags of the salts are available in both Amazon and g home bargains.

FollowYourOwnNorthStar · 10/11/2018 02:09

Hi all,
Just thought I would update and saying I have been taking the Floradix since 24/10. I have definitely been sleeping better and my mind just seems a bit calmer or less ‘thinky’ despite me going through quite a stressful time and home and work.
I’ve found the Floradix for as low as $20 AUD, ($1.60/day) so definitely worth it for the mental health and self care benefits from my perspective. I’ve also started adding liquid iron in the morning, which I think I also needed.

*Note I have no medical qualifications. Just saying what worked for me.
