Using metoclopramide

I have NCed for this.
I have been feeling intermittently nauseous for the last three days. I don't know why. I have a possible ongoing problem with my kidneys ( they ache but a scan was clear and urine tests have usually been clear ( but have also been positive)) and I'm waiting to see a urologist. I'm thinking it could be connected with this although the kidney thing has been going on since May and I haven't felt nausea before.
Other than that I am healthy and feel fine. I'm 51.
I do though have a phobia about vomiting so whenever I feel nauseous I panic. Because of this I have been taking metoclopramide ( which I was prescribed previously for something else). I have taken a maximum of three in one day, and just two today.
My question is, do you think this is OK to do? As I type this it sounds like a silly question even to me but I'm worrying that covering the nausea up is in some way a problem. They work really well and I'm going on holiday tomorrow so if I continue to feel nauseous I would like to take some while I'm away. If I still feel sick when I get back I'll go to my GP as that will be ten days of it by then.

You're not supposed to take metoclopramide for more than 5 days because of the risk of potentially serious neurological adverse effects (Parkinson's-like movement disorders and tardive dyskinesia [involuntary, repetitive body movements]). There's a specific warning about this in the British National Formulary and doctors have to be very careful about prescribing it: you shouldn't be taking it for something it wasn't prescribed for.

It could be worth going back to the GP to get something for travel sickness (e.g. cyclizine), as long as you're not going to be driving. It does sound like you need some kind of psychological therapy for the emetophobia but I know that realistically your GP isn't likely to give this a very high priority. He/she should, however, be trying to get to the bottom of the cause of the nausea.

Thank you. I feel a bit better today so haven't taken any. I have something else for travel too. If I don't feel better when I come back I will go to my GP
