Erm, sorry to be ignorant but what is it? Have I just made a fool of myself by asking?

Oh goodness, no, never heard of it either. Have your tried bathing with washing soda cyrstals in the bath or starch. Is there a homeopathic rememdy, sure there must be but I'm not advanced enough in my training to know. Can you use Lanacane powder to try and stop the itching or even calmine - sorry, just guessing here, I hope you find something soon.

Oh you poor thing, I'm itching just thinking about this and remembering back to 6 months ago. First - are you SURE it is pupp, and not Obstetric cholestasis. The key would be whether the rash has come prior to the itching, or if it is just an effect of all the itching you have been doing. Ask your doctor/midwife to do LFT's and a bile acid test to rule out OC.

For the itching - linen sheets, ice baths, cold flannels, cooled gel packs. As the itch is coming from within your body rather than being on your skin topical application of creams tends not to help. Cooling the skin restricts surface blood flow and can help. The only creams that do work are menthol or peepermint based ones (because of the cooling effect) but don't use these on skin that is broken as they really hurt.

I think that pupp is caused by liver problems, so remedies like cheladonia might help - but do consult a homeopath before thrying something like that.

Check the chicken pox threads for anti itch ideas?

Blacksky · 30/08/2004 12:20

Sorry didn't post since Thursday, I've been busy scratching!!!

Thank you prufrock for your advice. I will contact my GP tomorrow to see if he can prescribe a menthol cream. Keeping it cool helps a lot with the itch. It seems to be going now as it is my second week.

THANK YOU BEETROOT

I had it for the last 2 months! of my 1st pregnancy. I tried everything. Nothing (including steriods and antihistamines) worked and in the end a friend suggested something she used as a child in Korea. It worked better than anything else. It was St. Luke's Prickly Heat Powder. I had my parents bring it back from hongkong for me (they happened to be there on holiday ). You might be able to find it in a chinese medicine store here. It has menthol, diphenydramine (anithistamine), clamine and boric acid.
I have just checked the can and it has a website address on it which is www.bdlp.com. Let me know if you can't find it quickly and I'll send you some of mine to tide you over.

Ahh - sofia's post has reminded me that I have some Aussie "Soov" prickly heat powder. Haven't needed it this summer, surprisingly. It contains light liquid paraffin, zinc oxide, salicylic acid and butylhydroxybenzoate. When you put it on it feels faintly creamy rather than dusty. Can send it if you think it might help!
