GUM clinic for sore lady bits

Can’t get a gp appointment for a couple of weeks so thought about going to the local GUM clinic as I’ve had sore lady bits for weeks. Had a uti months ago and never been the same since. Not sure if it’s a skin thing so want to rule that out.

Just thought this might be quicker and better than seeing my gp and they might have more of an idea as they deal with this sort of thing all the time and I’ve not got much faith in my gp tbh. They do walk in sessions as well.

Never been before so not sure if it’s appropriate. Btw I’m in my 50’s and it’s definitely not an sti. Will they chase me out the door?

GUM = Genital and Urinary Medicine I think.

Lady bits = genitals.

Nothing about STIs in the name of the clinic so crack on I'd say.

Have you seen your gp about this Tamara? I just mentioned this very thing in women's health and yes go. They will test you for different things and once you get the all clear you can go to gp and see what they have to say.

Yes absolutely fine to go to gum clinic. They are experts in genital skin conditions.

Could it also be post menopausal dryness/irritation? Lots of women need topical oestrogen to help.

Yes Munchy. That's the route I'm going down but I read on a menopause forum that you should get checked at gum clinic first.
Maybe mention this to your gp OP as mine had no clue.

If you’ve recently had antibiotics for the UTI you mentioned, then you might have thrush. It’s not uncommon to develop a Candida infection after antibiotics.
If you’re not embarrassed about going to the clinic, it will mean you get seen and treated a lot quicker than waiting for a GP appointment.

Thank you. I had the antibiotics about 3 months ago. I don't have the classic thrush symptoms but I just don't feel right. I never thought of that but I suppose it could be a menopause thing.

I'd be more embarrassed if they refused to see me.

In some areas GUM clinics have been replaced with a test kit you send off - if that's the case in your area , why not try a walk-in centre?

Tamarapudding · 20/10/2018 12:03

No there are gum clinics in 3 hospitals in my area. Do you mean a general walk in place?
