Asked for a re scan. So scared of ovarian cancer

My doctor referred me for a pelvic scan due to menstrual irregularities. At the ultrasound she said there was fluid on the pelvis and a bit of blood in one of my ovaries and she wants me to go for another scan in 6 weeks. She said she couldn't see anything sinister but do they just say that so you don't freak out?

I have just received a letter from doctors to make a routine appointment to discuss the first ultrasound. I'm now petrified it's ovarian cancer. My appointment with the doctor isn't until next week and I'm so scared.

I think if they were concerned they would be more proactive in seeing you. I don't think they'd be waiting six weeks. Could you ask for a telephone appointment with you our GP to put your mind at ease?

Was it the sonographer who told you about the blood and fluid and said you should be re-scanned in 6 weeks? Have you been referred to the hospital for a consultation with a Gynae yet?

If you only saw the technician, the scans have to be interpreted by a radiologist who writes a report for your GP. If they saw anything remotely sinister, you would have been put on the 'could be cancer' 2 week pathway and they would have made an appointment for you to see a consultant Gynae.

At least, that's how it works in my trust. I know how difficult it is to cope with the waiting once the thought is in your head that it might be cancer. But ime, they've never said they couldn't see anything sinister, if they could. (The reverse, as it happened. They were wrong in my case. I had a huge tumour, but it wasn't malignant and I'm fine.) Blood on an ovary is quite common. Some people have spotting during ovulation. Fluid can mean there is inflammation going on somewhere. No mention of any cysts? It does sound unlikely that there's an ovarian malignancy.

But Flowers for you while you're waiting.
