Question about thyroid blood test result?

Ribbon14 · 17/10/2018 12:02

Hi all,

I have a lot of the symptoms of an overactive thyroid. Had some blood tests done which came back as:

TSH 0.75 which is at the lower end of normal range (range given as 0.27-4.2)
and Free thyroxine was 20.4 with range given as 12-22.

So this was classed as normal.

My symptoms are muscle pain and weakness, fatigue, stomach problems especially loose bowel movements, anxiety and feeling on edge and feeling hot amongst other things.

Is there any possibility it could still be my thyroid or does anyone have any suggestions what else could be going on? I'm at my wit's end as have been feeling like this for about a year.

Those thyroid results look damn near perfect. It would however be useful to have an FT3 result as well, but on what's in front of us I see no cause for concern.

I know that's not helpful, but you may have to keep looking for a cause for your symptoms.

TSH is best lower in the range with frees in the upper limit. Without FT3 and antibodies though it's not that conclusive.

How are your vitamin/mineral levels? D, B12, folate, ferritin?

I have had some of your symptoms and have been on folic acid and now a B12 injection, I have been utterly exhausted, terrible leg cramps, foggy brain, but I've been feeling really cold, but I have IBS so can't comment on the bowel situation.

AAGGH is right. You also need a Free T3 measure and antibodies test; the antibodies will show if you have Hashimoto's, which would make you swing between hypo and hyper thyroid. You may even get normal test results back if they're taken at the wrong time.
The bad news is that given your TSH and FT4 are in the normal range, you're very unlikely to get a FT3 test on the NHS. Look at medichecks for fingerpick tests; they do special offers on thyroid tests on Thursdays.

Thanks for your replies. I've had my vitamin d checked about 4 months ago. Was 60 which is classified in sufficient range. My ferritin was 35 and b12 was 61.

The Vitamin D council now recommends that you have levels of at least 100.

Do you have the lab range for your B12? It seems to be extremely low and likely to be causing / contributing to your symptoms. Unless it's a different measure called Active B12, but the NHS doesn't usually test this.

Your ferritin is also fairly low and people have been known to have their hair fall out even at levels of 50 for example, so I'd get them all up. Your folate is probably on the lower side too.

I'd get checked for coeliac disease and pernicious anaemia. You should be on B12 injections.

Thanks for your reply. That's very helpful. It was active b12 and was in the range so maybe it's OK? Don't t think I had folate checked

Oh that is a surprise! Then it's probably fine, what is the range?
