Palpitations

.....are pretty new to me. I've experienced them only in the past few months. The ones I have are when I am sitting/lying down usually and just last a few seconds, like a skipped/hard beat and then they are gone.
However the last week they have been more frequent and today I've felt them for a few hours. Not continuous but on/off continuous if that makes sense.
I've not changed anything. A bit over weight at the mo but blood pressure is in normal range (110/67) but lowish for me I guess. My pulse seems OK but a bit erratic in that it speeds up and slows down quite a lot whilst not changing activity. I have been extremely tired the past year or so. (crash down to bed as soon as I walk through the door at 4pm before I pick the kids at 5pm). It's the only thing I can think of as soon as I walk out of work. Like real exhaustion.

I've read palps are quite common and not to be worried unless accompanied by dizziness or fainting so I'm thinking there's nothing to be worried about.

Anyone else have palpitations that have come on fairly suddenly>?
Thank you

What age are you? Apparently they can start occurring in peri menopausal and menopausal women, due to hormone fluctuations.

Go and talk to your GP, its worth getting an ECG to put your mind at rest. They are usually benign, but sometimes a symptom pf something more. Something you can do is take magnesium supplements daily, the full 100%. Low levels can often cause arrythmias. Also if you are having some lumpy beats, try jumping on the spot for a while, most benign arrythmias will disappear if you make it speed up. If the arrythmias increase on exercise, you should get to the GP sooner and tell them.

One good thing to do is to avoid all caffeine, as it can really rev up the palpitations. I had several really scary events, and the doc told me to stop all caffeine intake. I've never had a caffeinated coffee or a caffeine drink of any kind since, and the palpitations never recurred so I guess doc was right. It's an easy fix !

Make an appointment with your GP. They should do an ECG and run some bloods. Your iron levels should be checked (palpitations were one of my main symptoms of anaemia). You say you have them when you're sitting/lying down but it's likely they're happening throughout the day and it's only when you're still that you notice them more.

Thanks all. Sorry I've not replied. Been at work. I am 38. Most recent med hist was a DVT a few years ago. Sister recently had ECG done but can't be sure why.

Sea..going back to the magnesium thing. I started getting really bad cramps in my DVT leg about a year ago and Dr mentioned magnesium deficiency I think. I was naughty and didn't go back for bloods at the time though as couldn't get time off and then just left it.

I had exactly the same and was diagnosed with a under active thyroid.

Yup magnesium is the culprit for many leg cramps, heart arrythmias and general agitation. Its lifes calmer downer.

Definitely get checked for anaemia. That would explain both the palpitations and the exhaustion. They're very common. I've had them all my life. They get worse before and during my period, if I have a lot of caffeine and when I eat too much cheese! Always best to get checked.

killingmesoftly70 · 16/10/2018 23:03

Ok, you've all convinced me to get an appointment. Sally, I do love my cheese.
