Reflux?

I’ve been having what I think is terrible acid reflux after eating. It’s like a constant burning in my throat after eating and like there’s a huge lump. I take Gaviscon but it’s not really easing the pain that much. I was just wondering if anyone else has any experience of this and if there’s anything else I can take to ease it?

Yes I do. You need to see your GP to find out for definite it's what you think it is.

Don't put it off like I did. It's not going to go away on its own.

Thank you for your reply. I was wondering about going to my GP. If it is reflux, are there things they can give you?

I have lpr which is silent reflux. I had a terrible time with not being able to swallow and feeling a lump. I’d recommend the acid watchers diet book but in the meantime eat a low acid diet as much as you can. No tea/coffee, no alcohol, cut back in dairy and don’t have any fatty or greasy foods. Use gaviscon advance and raise the head of your bed a few inches (also don’t eat for a few hours before bed) I was taking lansoprazole which really helped and now I have switched to ranitidine. Hope this helps. But yes go see the GP.

Hi OP, I've had bad acid reflux since pregnancy which is made worse by eating / drinking particular things. I will make it to the GP at some point but for now I buy ranitidine over the counter / from the supermarket (eg Zantac but the generic ones are just as good and often much cheaper). You can take 2 a day but I get by with 1 in the morning and take a second in the evening if I'm going to have spicy food or wine. I find I have to take the ranitidine before eating - it seems to be better at stopping acid building up but little use at controlling it once it's there. If I need to get rid of acid that's already built up I take Rennie too.

You're only supposed to take ranitidine for a few days and see the doctor if it doesn't fix the problem.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I’ll keep an eye out for the acid watchers diet book! I wondered if anyone knows if the Gp can tell if it’s reflux by looking at your throat?

No you'll need an endoscopy. It's not that bad, ask them to do it up your nose . Much easier.

Then they can prescribe your meds.

However if you follow the GERD diet, lose any excess weight it might sort itself out. You'll have to be strict with yourself.
