Kidney function 37%

A family member has this level of kidney function on an already transplanted kidney (the second transplant and only kidney). Not receiving dialysis...as yet. Does anyone know how well a third transplant is likely to be accepted?

I don't but someone close to me was living relatively healthily on

I looked this very thing up the other day! Apparently people can have 1,2,3,4 or even 5 transplants. And each transplant has as good a chance as each earlier one. Smile

PS Dh new recipient of first kidney transplant.

It’s really impossible to say as there’s so many variables. E.g.

  • is it a rapid decline?
  • is it because of rejection, infection, drugs etc
  • is it due to the condition that caused them to need a transplant in the first place

Their kidney doctor will be able to give them a better prognosis. If it was declining rapidly it’s likely they’d be talking about dialysis already. A fistula takes 6 months to get going.

Missed the bit about a transplant - it’s on basis of need. Unless their kidney was failing because they weren’t taking their drugs or following lifestyle advice, there’s no reason they wouldn’t get another one.
