Any ideas? Numbness in hand

Just after any experience really, I know I need to go to an actual GP etc but don't want to necessarily waste an appointment.

Randomly, I have two areas of numbness in my hands and some very sporadic pins and needles sensations. The two areas are the tip of my middle finger left hand and almost the entire area on the back of my right hand between my thumb and index finger (I'm right handed if that's relevant)

Neither is sore, just numb Confused

Sounds like carpal tunnel, but I could be wrong. You wouldn't be wasting their time, especially if it's been going on a while.

I had this earlier in the year, I have MS so blamed that but doctors said it’s carpal tunnel syndrome. I’ve fully recovered now

ScreamingValenta · 13/10/2018 14:22

This can be a symptom of a trapped/damaged nerve in your arm or shoulder, such as the ulnar nerve.

weegiemum · 13/10/2018 14:43

I'd get a non-urgent appt with the GP - especially as it is in both hands. It's probably just a trapped nerve or carpal tunnel, but there are other much rarer things it could be. Worth getting checked out.

Fightthebear · 13/10/2018 14:52

I had this last year.

After blood tests came back clear, I was referred to a neurologist. After an MRI scan and nerve conduction tests they couldn’t find anything wrong. Neurologist said they don’t in about 50% of referrals for pins & needles.

It was quite a relief as the GP had said she wanted to rule out MS. Just have to live with the pins and needles now . . .

You need to go and see your gp.

Carpal tunnel

Bobbiepin · 13/10/2018 14:56

Randomly this is a sign that I'm going to have an asthma attack but more likely to be carpal tunnel.

Otterseatpuffinsdontthey · 13/10/2018 15:11

As you're worried - go to your G.P. - they shouldn't see it as a wasted appointment.
I've had Carpal Tunnel for years. Right hand only, left hand only, or both together.
Varies between mildly annoying to feeling as if hand being crushed in a vice!Sad
Goes away for months/years - then returns.
Night-splint - waste of time.
Not having corrective surgery - as it usually doesn't!
2 things to consider - have you put on weight? Are you taking contraceptive pill?

tempname111 · 13/10/2018 15:29

Thanks all Smile

I've gained some middle aged spread the last few years, no contraception.

MS did flick through my mind as I've a distant cousin who has it.

Done a desk/pc job the last 3 years, not sure if that's related.

Getting a GP appointment is nigh on impossible here but if I have a morning off I'll go to drop in.

Thanks again

Given your job, it could Repetitive Strain Injury (R.S.I.)?
Definitely good idea to see G.P.
