Asthma??

I am worried I may be developing asthma, can it develop in adulthood?

I have never been a really active person, used to go through stages of doing aerobics a few times a week but would always give it up after a while so I was always short of breath after any kind of exercise but nothing worrying...

Anyway a few months ago I started doing aerobics again but the feeling afterwards was very different, like a crushing feeling in my chest, difficult to breath in, difficult to explain really but its happened ever since after every bit of excercise I do and this morning I did aerobics and afterwards found it difficult to breathe even though I didn't feel tired or out of breath, it just feels like someone is standing on my chest and when I try to breathe in i make a wheezing sound and feel like I need to cough.

Asthma runs in the family, could it be developing?

You can develop asthma in adulthood yes. It does sound rather like it, especially the wheezing and the shortness of breath. I am asthmatic and have been all my life, the only thing that is not quite right is the not being able to breathe in. With asthma it's the breathing out that is difficult but I suppose if it is all new to you than it just feels 'wrong'. Asthma is very frightening and can be serious so please get yourself checked out. If it is just mild you'll be amazed at the difference a couple of puffs of Ventolin can make. I have been really bad the last couple of days, think it's down to the weather - heat and then impending storms are 2 of my triggers.

I developed hayfever a couple of years ago which has grown to be quite bad and I have been told it can be connected to asthma...

I'll make an apointment with the doctor.

My asthma was diagnosed when I was about 19 or so so yes it can develop in adulthood. I agree with the advice to get it checked out. Whatever the cause you need help if you are wheezing and/or breathless. Good luck.
