High ALT levels

Does anyone know anything about this please? It was picked up that my levels were high a few months ago when I had a blood test for something completely unrelated. Since then I’ve had a couple more tests both of which have shown the levels are dropping but today I’ve been referred for an ultrasound by my gp as a ‘precaution’
I don’t drink at all and am not overweight - BMI of 24 so just within normal limit. I like to think I eat fairly sensibly so just cannot think of any reason I might have liver problems.
I’m quite an anxious person and am worrying about this - Im 65 so no pregnancy involved by the way!

So it could be a bit of fat within the liver - you don’t have to be overweight to have fatty tissue around your organs.

However if it’s dropping I wonder if you’ve had a virus at some point that’s caused a wee bit of a rise in your liver enzymes and the levels are dropping as you’ve got better? Or even a change in meds that has now been resolved? Lots of the time it can be antibiotics.

If it is a bit of fat around liver, in most people it won’t be causing much in the way of harm, just highlights the general healthy living message. In some people it can progress, but as long as your ast is okay and not rising to a point where it is much higher than your alt then I wouldn’t worry, just focus on keeping active and eating well (easier said than done! I’m a bmi 24 too and it doesn’t take much slacking/cheat days for me to drift upwards!)

It’s good that you’re getting an uss and presumably the rest of your bloods didn’t show up anything to point your Gp towards another cause?

Hope that’s helpful. You could always check with your Gp what exactly they’re looking for on the scan if that helps with anxiety? I’ve found when I’m waiting for tests the uncertainty is very anxiety provoking!

Thank you so much for your reply, it all makes perfect sense and I really appreciate you taking the time to reassure me.

I feel a lot better since calling to make the appointment and the very helpful person on the end of the line told me my GP had marked it as low priority, and booked me in for mid November.
