What to do about DD sore eye?

Dd came downstairs last night with a very red, weepy, sore eye. We looked and looked to see what was causing it but couldn't find any sign of a stray eyelash, bit of grit etc.

She went back to bed, got a bit of sleep (eye didn't hurt while eyelid was closed) and woke up still red-eyed. In the last hour or so, the redness and weepiness has cleared up - but she says it's still sore and a bit itchy and can only get relief when her eye is closed.

We've done eye drops. No effect and still no sign of a foreign body. What should I do? GP? Walk-in clinic? Keep her off school for a day or so in the hope it clears up?

I don't want to overreact but I don't want her eye damaged if I leave it a while. TIA.

Pharmacist should be able to help and if it’s conjunctivitis give cream

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 10/10/2018 09:28

she might have scratched her cornea, dh did this (with the help of the cat) and said it was excruciating to open his eye, but fine when closed.

Maybe phone your nearest optician, and see if they will squeeze her in. Depending on age and cooperation they could use the slitlamp or maybe just dye drops and a UV lamp.

A bigger opticians would be better...ime they have more staff and are better able to fit in an impromptu exam.

Hmm, the supermarket pharmacist didn't seem to have much idea. I have a pharmacist friend, though, who starts work in about an hour. Might pop out and consult her.

pharmacists and gp's don't have the tools to look into the eye.
go to an optician.
they can have a thorough look and rinse if needed and advise on further treatment.

Definitely optician.
DH injured his eye and went along to our local optician. They examined his eye and gave him antibiotic drops. £10 and in and out in 30 minutes.
Excellent service.

Thanks, opticians seems so obvious - not sure why I didn't think of it Confused.

Off to town now to do the rounds of the opticians and see who can squeeze us in - thanks again.
