My ds who is 4 has been itching since he has come back from daddy's house and his anus is quite red. He had obviosuly been itching it and i can see bits of skin coming off. He has slightly white small blobs (just inside when i cleaned him and tried to look) that are kindof round but not stringy like i thought worms would be like.

Could it still be worms? is so do I need to be treated too.

it is possible to have both too!

have a look tonight with a torch and see what you find!

You often can't see the worms although one of my sons did. We sadly have them at the moment.

Buy for the whole family ASAP the Ovex tablets you can buy from pharmacies. In addition you need to wash and also change pyjamas every day.

It takes ages to catch and develop so it won't have been caught at his father's house by the way but he may have infected his father.

But you may want to take him to the GP to be checked. Ask him neutrally about what he thinks has happened to it. (Just in case it's not that and someone hurt him at the weekend which is unlikely but worth a completely unloaded question about it.)

Could never bring myself to look but have always assumed itchy bum = worms and have treated accordingly.

Sometimes it's anal rape though.. although unlikely or cancer of the rectum so it's best to check. My son saw the worms and told me. I remember about 12 years ago it was the same with my daughter - you don't see them on the bottom but it's the eggs that are laid there (have become an expert in the last week - my life is such fun) but you sometimes see the worms or the child does when it defecates.

yeah but it could also be thrush (which would account for the white blobs and the redness)

don't forget to cut nails if it is worms

jellyjelly · 13/06/2007 19:53

I normally have to bite them to cut them. Guess i wont be doing that. Gave them a good scrub with the nail brush tonight in the bath and stuck a small amount of canestan on him. He doesnt have excema at the moment - its more prevention than cure for him.

I told his dad and the other child has a white bottom at the moment. I told him to check with new girlfirend if she thinks her son has worms as they could have passed it over.

Do i have to wash his jamas everyday or are they ok sitting in the basket? I wash at 30.

If it is worms they just need you to get the tablet which kills them in the stomach but it doesn't kill the eggs on the bottom hence the need to wash but what is so awful I was reading is the eggs can survive for something like 2 weeks just on the bedding or on toys or the floor or wherever the child has been. They could be all around us here so even though they're killed off in his tummy he can reinfect by touching eggs again. That's why the tablet is then taken 2 weeks later too to kill off even more.

lol xenia - I got a bit freaked out by that info when we had worms too. Write down when you need that second dose on the calendar. Despite convincing myself I would remember, I forgot when the time came (so easy to forget once you've sorted the itchiness!).

jellyjelly · 13/06/2007 21:06

Have to find torch to look. Dont think i have one.
