Blood test on Thurs, rang back following day and told to make gp appt ASAP

Dd who’s 18yo has been feeling unwell for ages. Random small stuff, she is frequently sick, heartburn, feels sick every day and vomits small amounts most days. Aches, pains. Has also recently started with headaches and she says some palpitations. She’s gone from a size 12 to a size 6 in the last 12 months with no diet change.

Last year she had blood tests and was vit d deficient and anemic. Started iron tablets and vit d and was meant to have a repeat blood test but refused due to needle phobia.

So she went back to the doctors last week by herself and told him she was worried she had lupus (she’s been googling). Dr also said he was going to test her for diabetes and some “other stuff” but would do a lupus test?

She had the blood test thurs lunchtime and got a phone call fri early afternoon from the receptionist saying she needs to see the dr ASAP. Dd told the receptionist she can’t come until Thursday and receptionist said can she not come sooner but dd said no. She has a free period thurs morning and doesn’t want to miss school my having an appt on an earlier day.

Friend of mine who works at a different doctors said the lab must have rung the result through to the doctors for it to be back that soon. So it must be something fairly out of normal range which needs a prompt review. I know when I’ve been anaemic I don’t get the results back that fast and even then it’s just like “go pick a prescription up for iron tablets”.

I’m worrying now. If it was diabetes they’d have told her it couldn’t wait until thurs wouldn’t they? I got her to wee on a urinalysis stick and she doesn’t have glucose but does have proteinurea.

And of course I don’t know what else she’s been tested for as she didn’t ask.

Do doctors sometimes get the results back that quickly and everything is ok? Maybe he wants to talk to her to say results are normal and talk about further tests or just reassure her?

My GP gets my blood results literally within 24 hours. I got a letter a few months ago which was dated the day I got the tests. Apparently he can log in and see results. So different practises clearly do things differently. Mine showed I was severely anaemic and the doctor wanted to see me ASAP for prescriptions & to arrange further tests.

I must admit I was terrified when I got the letter, thankfully though when I phoned they were able to reassure me.

Sounds like it might be a better idea though for your daughter to get an earlier appt

Fatted · 07/10/2018 18:44

It might be something that needs urgent treatment rather than anything too serious.

When I was anemic, the doctors rang me and told me to come in because my levels were seriously low. Even though I was feeling what I thought was fine at the time!

NicoAndTheNiners · 07/10/2018 18:47

Thank you. Yes, I suppose they may have gone electronic and quicker than what I’ve known previously. Maybe my GP deals with it all a bit quicker than where my friend works.

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 07/10/2018 18:48

And yes maybe the GP just felt sorry for her because she feels so rubbish so wants to start something simple sooner rather than later.

She should phone them tomorrow and take the next appointment they offer her.

Robots1Humans0 · 07/10/2018 18:52

I got a call back the next day for a broken thyroid that needs treating, not urgent but could do with getting sorted. Maybe something like that? Going to be a long week for you though! Try to convince her to go sooner ! Xxxxxxx

EBearhug · 07/10/2018 18:57

If mine do the bloods before they'Re picked up to be taken to the lab, they're often back quickly. Last time I had a blood test, the driver waited for my blood to be in a test-tube and labelled up, as he arrived just as the nurse was about to put the needle in.

NicoAndTheNiners · 07/10/2018 19:03

Until recently I worked at the hospital where the lab is. They don’t test the bloods from the GPS until the following day.

Could you be minimising this a bit. The GP phoned to say come back ASAP so why would you and your daughter not make every effort to do that. She's down to a size 6 from a healthy 12.
Is it possible she could have an eating disorder?

buscaution · 07/10/2018 22:28

Why is she waiting until Thursday? That's a bit silly given that the doctor has requested to see her ASAP. Not much point asking for help on here when she won't help herself in real life.

NicoAndTheNiners · 07/10/2018 22:37

Seaweed, she’s nearly 18yo, I can’t make her go to the doctors earlier. I have told her I think she ought to ring them up tomorrow morning. But of course today she’s feeling better so doesn’t think she needs to.

I don’t think she’s got an eating disorder. She eats ok and I see no signs of bulimia. She put weight in when she went on the pill and then stopped taking the pill which seemed to trigger the weight loss.

It could be anything. When I was badly anaemic I got a letter requesting an appointment ASAP
When I was severely neutropenic I got a phone call which was "haematology now" and no further discussion about whether I could go or not
When my dad turned out to be so anaemic he needed two blood transfusions, they sent an ambulance
So it's not likely to be anything particularly bad, but more urgent maybe?

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 07/10/2018 22:44

Is it school she attends? Could she not just go in late and see gp in the morning?

Seaweed42 · 07/10/2018 22:45

And no chance she is pregnant?

NicoAndTheNiners · 08/10/2018 06:24

She says she’s never had sex so hopefully not pregnant. It’s been going on for ages though. I’ve told her I don’t mind if she has been having sex so I don’t think she would fib.

Yes just school. She’s had two weeks off sick already since she started back so is worried about missing more school.

In the end if it was so essential she went immediately, it's the gp who would have called her after the receptionist had reported back. Receptionist can be alarmist because the gp will say ASAP but they themselves might not know how ASAP it really is so they make it out to be urgent just in case.

Still I understand your worry but indeed they are 18 and it's up to them to decide.

NicoAndTheNiners · 08/10/2018 17:52

Well she was sent home from school today and is on the sofa crying in pain. She has constant stomach pain and kidney area pain.

I rang the GP surgery, no appts available. However receptionist was a bit more forthcoming and says the blood results say routine not urgent. Receptionist suggested I go to a&e with her as no out of hours or minor injury here. Dd refuses to go. I’ve told her I have no sympathy anymore. She makes me so bloody cross!

OP posts:
SpoonBlender · 08/10/2018 18:19

Last time I was crying in pain I had a kidney stone (as it later turned out). I was so fucked up I couldn't make a competent decision. I happened to be home alone and the failure was 'no, I don't need to ring 111 or 999'. If she's as bad as I was then she needs you to make the decision for her.

Nogodsnomasters · 08/10/2018 21:40

How is your daughter now op? It sounds like such a worrying time for you both.

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/10/2018 06:01

She seemed a bit better pain wise by last night. Still feels really nauseous and this seems to be made worse by eating. But did have some pasta last night.

OP posts:
HappyHedgehog247 · 09/10/2018 06:06

Would she let you go with her to the doctors?

NicoAndTheNiners · 09/10/2018 06:24

I’m going with her on Thurs morning. A nurse friend has told me to get the dr to test her for H.pylori, said her dd had similar symptoms for ages and it turned out to be this.

OP posts:
NeverKeepANameTooLong · 09/10/2018 06:31

An ulcer won't cause what you are describing. Serious illness or substance misuse would. You are hugely minimising OP. DD is avoiding the GP, if she really has no idea why she is so ill she would be down the GP and wanting your help. Stop posting here and get help. 17yr olds don't drop from size 12 to size 6 without setting off massive alarm bells.

Sleephead1 · 09/10/2018 06:35

I work in a surgery the labs do sometimes ring results through but we transfer the call to on call GP and they would then be trying to contact patient. If they couldn't then they will ask us to keep trying but it will say something like urgent needs seen in 24 hours please book asap. If it said this and the patient wanted to wait a week we would try to explain doctor wants to see them urgently please can they come and try to get them in if possible. Did they try and convince her to come ? If the results come back a d the doctor wants to see them urgently they mark this and we need to squeeze then in asap. Some things are very urgent eg today / 24 hours some withing a few days. Bloods do sometimes come back the same day , that does happen and if the doctor is in that day and doing their admin work they could see them the same day and then send a message. If a staff member is then going through the messages it could all happen on the same day but be nothing to worry about. Just everyone being very efficient. It could also be a case of the doctor who asked to see your daughter only works part time and they had a cancellation say on Monday so she was offered that as it was next available appointment. If you are worried what about trying fir a telephone consultation to discuss ? Hope its nothing serious and she feels better soon
