I'm new to mn so i don't know if anybody has any experiance with epilepsy, but thought i would ask.My dd has got to go to birmingham children's hospital to see a neurologist. There is a chance she has been having fits and gp wants her checked. My fil has epilepsy, but hasn't had i fit for afew years. Also his brother has it to but he has no contact with him so unsure how bad he suffers.Anybody know what i should prepare my dd for when we go to hospital.I should add we have to wait for a appointment,so i'm taking that has a good sign.

no experience but bumping for you.

This was queried with my DD when she was 9mts. They did an EEG which involved putting blobs of vasoline type stuff on various parts of her scalp and attaching monitors. Took a couple of hours, completely painless for dc just need to bring lots of entertainment to stop the urge to grab at the leads.

sorry, can't offer more.

Hope all goes well for you and dd

Thanks AbRoller,i haven't got to worry about entertaining to much,dd is 14yrs.But i still worry about the tests she has to have, and she is older so she worrys too.

ah right, sorry I just assumed a little one.

I'm not 100% but I'd imagine it'll be simular procedure to test electrical function.

Anyone who works with children or young adults will understand her fears and aprehension, they'll explain all before they do anything.

Epilepsy can be a scary thought but there are many different forms from simple absences to convulsive fitting however it's far better managed today than years ago. Lots of meds to control fitting and many other advances in science. I know of at least 2 people who had years of trying to deal with it and with medication in the last few years have had no episodes

wishing your DD all the best

Dear brokebuthappy,

My 6yr old daughter was diagnosed with epilepsy just over 2 years ago, and this website www.epilepsynse.org.uk has been really very informative, and very helpful.

They have a section for young people to post, and also a section for parents with any questions.

hope this is of some help to you.

Julie
