5 year old suffering from Migraines

Long-ish post - sorry!
My poor little dd1 suffers from periodic migraines. She will out of the blue say she can't see very well and feels sick and within 15 minutes will be throwing up and getting incredibly distressed/almost hysterical while doing so. She is also totally disorientated and her eyes roll right back and her neck is all stiff - very frightening for all concerned!! She will then crash out for an hour or so, wake up and announce she is hungry and can she watch TV!! On later questioning it transpires that she has had a worsening headache but hasn't thought to mention it being busy with something else. She often has these episodes at school which means that I have to go and collect her (have no car so difficult at the best of times) and the teachers are obvsiously concerned. Our GP referred her to a Paediatrician who confirmed the migraine diagnosis then said that the causes of migraines were mostly a mystery and that there was nothing that could be done really apart from trying to manage the episode in as calm a way as possible and hope that she grows out of it. Since the episodes are so sporadic we obviously didn't want to put her on any medication and at her age there is not much she could take anyway. I myself suffered from migraines as a child but not at quite such a young age and still do on occasion and mine seem to be stress related. I guess she has inherited more from me than my brown eyes!!!
I wondered if anyone else's little ones suffer, what their symptoms/ behaviour are and what you do to deal with it?

That sounds horrid for your poor little dd. Ds2 had migraines from a young age but they were more of the sick headache type and he didn't get aura until he was older. I'm not sure what to suggest to help but have you been in touch with the migraine charity, www.migraine.org.uk/ ? They have a special section for children.

Thanks Suedonim I have seen the site you recommended - helpful though aimed at older kids. My main aim at the moment is to try to get dd to tell someone as soon as the headache starts and not wait until she is about to chuck up! That way maybe she can be given an appropriate painkiller to see if it helps. She doesn't describe an aura as such (I don't get this either) just that she can't see very well - which I take to mean her vision is blurry! It is so difficult trying to get info out on a 5 year old who has no concept of time and without making her say what she thinks I want her to say! I guess the one good thing about going to the paediatrician is that he ruled out anything more serious being amiss altough I knew it was migraines before he officially diagnosed it!
